It’s a Miracle! Great News for Mr. Sunshine!
It’s a miracle, Mr. Sunshine doesn’t need surgery! What a birthday gift!
I’ve been checking that lump a couple times a week since his last appointment a month ago, leaving time in between so that I would more easily notice changes from one check to the next. I thought I felt it growing smaller but thought it was my imagination and wishful thinking.
However, last week when I checked it on Monday after a long weekend with shows and things I actually couldn’t find it. Like, it was gone. This thing had been the size of the first joint of my thumb, right there under the skin—it was not difficult to find. I felt Mr. Sunshine up, down and sideways, from all angles. I can’t tell left from right, and I checked him each time from several different angles so I’d be familiar with it, so I couldn’t remember which side it was on, but no matter how I ran my hands over him he was completely symmetrical all the way down. I was sure I was missing something, because sarcomas don’t just go away.
The surgeon had told me to call if there was any change, and this was a change for sure! I called PVSEC and explained what I’d found.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, would have been Mr. Sunshine’s surgery day, but they made an appointment for today to look at him first thing and maybe do an ultrasound if there was a reason to. The surgeon found the lump was gone too, and confirmed there’s just a little thickening left in the area where it was. But there’s no reason to subject him to surgery for that.
A friend had mentioned (Harry, that’s you) and the surgeon as well that a lump will sometimes develop at the site of a vaccine that persists for a while before shrinking back and disappearing, but he had received this vaccine in November 2020, going on two years ago, and that was too long of a time span for that type of lump to develop. I hadn’t found anything on him until this spring.
I will continue to check him weekly, along with his brothers who also received the same vaccine. I called and let his regular veterinarian know as well. We’ll keep an eye on that for sure and the surgeon and I agreed on September, two months from now, for a recheck.
The only treatment he had was an antibiotic in April, after which the lump was still prominent and easy to find, then the Chinese herb combination prescribed by Dr. Michelle in early May which he’s still getting. But I feel that’s what worked for him.
I offered to refund friends’ donations but many told me to hold onto them for cat rescue and other feline related things, like Simba’s prescription food, senior exams for Mewsette, Giuseppe and Jelly Bean, and Mimi’s follow up exam, as well as care for the rest of the household.
He may not be out of the woods and I need to keep an eye on his brothers. For now we are so lucky!
And today is Sunshine’s and his siblings’ 15th birthday. It’s going to be a huge celebration! I have a few photos from today to share a little later.

Mr. Sunshine Dishtowels!
Both of these designs are Mr. Sunshine! I purchase the 20″ x 26″ Tekla dishtowels at IKEA and imprint the sketches of my fine felines interacting with my dishtowels with a fabric transfer trimmed down to the image. The towels also have one vertical red stripe about 6″ from each edge. The towels themselves are 100% cotton and very soft and absorbent.
Mr. Sunshine has been very popular at vendor markets—everyone seems to have a cat who looks like him!
Towels are $10.00 each. You can purchase them here.
