Five Little Kittens Socializing Very Well

I’m sorry I’ve missed updates for a few days! Observing unwell kitties and coaxing them to eat takes the time it takes, plus other work and household things. So I have photos of the kittens from Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, and a 16-minute video at the end, if you can handle the cuteness. I took quite a few videos over the days and just trimmed them all together.

They have been making huge strides in socialization and are socializing very quickly. In part I think that they are in the sunroom adjacent to their outdoor territory, they can see it, smell it, hear it, is a great bridge to coming indoors. After they tolerated the crate partially uncovered with us in the room, we edged along and uncovered the entire thing. Then left it uncovered all day, covered at night. They were a little more reserved when we were in the room, but eventually that faded. Then the foster added food right after they had finished and they watched, then out they came as soon as he stood up and went back to his chair.
There are signs of scratching in the scratch lounge, and they play in it too. And in the video you can see them playing owner of the scratching post. Good kittens!

At that point I pulled out the wand toys and demonstrated for both the people and the cats. Their daughter and two adult grandchildren visited, covers were up, they adapted to the conversation and were only cautious when the kids were talking to them. Then the other daughter visited with younger children who sat on the floor and looked at them, same adaptation. The kids named the two black kittens Midnight and Pepper, but they aren’t sure which is which. This black kitten comes closest to humans and makes direct eye contact. She did that with me the first time I looked into her trap.

One particular short-haired gray kitten is the first to do everything, is the most active, and has been interested in interacting with the humans. I got her to follow the fleece charmer around the crate, then pull the entire thing into the crate while I held it. The foster offered food on a long-handled spoon and she ate it.

Here are just some cute photos of one of the black kittens who both like to drape themselves off the hammock like this. It’s difficult to photograph through the crate, and the light is uneven because I want to keep the top covered as long as possible–taking that off can really frighten them.
And here is actually what the “crate” looks like. It’s actually two crates together so they have lots of room, their food and litter are far enough apart, and the fosters can open the door at the far end and scoop with plenty of visual warning if it looks like one of the kittens wants to make a break for it. But none have.

“I’m looking for something to do. If I don’t find it, I’ll make it up.”

Here’s that video!
