July Featured Artwork and Desktop Calendar: Lazy Saturday Afternoon

`Lazy Saturday Afternoon, watercolor, 9 x 12 © Bernadette E. Kazmarski

Who said black cats had to be black?

I’ve been wanting to share this watercolor from 2012—I painted it in June 2012 and it was one of my first ever desktop calendars the very next month! I decided it was time to share them again, eight years later.

It’s Giuseppe in the front in teal, Mewsette draped off the edge in green, and Jelly Bean in purple, napping on top of the pine wardrobe at the top of the stairs. Rather than use the colors I associate with each of them, these colors came about because of the reflections on each of them from the window light, the mirror behind them and the walls. I hadn’t intended to do them in different colors though! This time I actually wanted them to be purple, maybe, with tints of other colors, but here we are again.

I’ve always been proud of what I accomplished with this painting. I had only begun my daily cat sketches the previous December intending to improve my skills in any media I could use. For watercolors, I had always sketched a bit, or a lot, in light pencil, but this particular afternoon I knew that time was of the essence, because even when they’re really sleeping they still move enough to throw me off.

No watercolor pencils this time, no pencil lines, just the colors and a brush and three cats having a really good afternoon nap on top of the wardrobe—so good they stayed still long enough for me to paint the basics before they moved. This is a first for me (not them, they nap all the time)—I have never been able to watercolor without an underlying pencil sketch. I’ve never put the brush to paper and felt I had enough control to just paint in watercolors. I have to credit all the daily experience of my daily sketches with giving me this confidence and control. My goal was this loose quality, though, just enough to indicate their shapes and positions, no more.

This month’s desktop calendar

I’ve worked this image into a desktop calendar for you to enjoy and use for the entire month. Looking at the downloads from previous months and averaging out which dimensions fit which devices, I have reduced the number of variations from 12 to three. It was very time-consuming to create all the variations with new devices arriving all the time, so I have one for horizontal monitors/screens, one for square monitors/screens, and one that should fit the dimensions of nearly all mobile devices.

If these sizes don’t work for your device, or if you have problems, please let me know. Often I can troubleshoot the reason an image won’t download or won’t load on your device, but if I just can’t figure it out I can just email it to you and hope that works.

How to download and use your desktop calendar

  1. Click on one of the images below that matches the dimensions of your monitor to open the image in a new page.
  2. For desktop computers and laptops, right-click on that image and on a desktop computer choose “save as desktop wallpaper” or “save as background” or whichever option your operating system gives you to be able to do this. You may also simply save it to your hard drive and set it as your background from there.
  3. For mobile devices, download the image to your gallery then choose it as your wallpaper—this is slightly different on all devices.
