Daily Sketch Reprise: Winter Morning

I did post these two as part of another post day before yesterday, but hadn’t intended to. Here are the full-size images and the other post with a little extra.

Mimi looks out this window nearly every day so I should have plenty of chances to sketch her, but I rarely have my art materials or my ability to focus first thing. I decided today was the day, though it was bright overcast, without the clear hard shadows of a brilliant winter morning. Still, the softened shadows were filled with dusky colors while even Mimi’s mahogany was nearly red.

This is just a bit of a thing in soft pastels on pastel paper in the little 5″x 7″ pads I keep at a couple of desks–and keep forgetting I have on hand. I used a buff underneath this, to make sure I kept it warm. It reminds me a bit of another sketch from earlier this year, “The Sunny Upstairs Window”, and here, framed.

I don’t think Mimi likes it, though; she keeps walking back and forth in front of my monitor, and I get the idea she’s hoping I don’t post it.

I like to show the edges of a sketch like this, but they take on a slightly different character when they’ve been cropped to the essential image, as below.

. . . . . . . .

What else was I sketching on this date?

This entry has two posts, one the sketch of Mewsette, and one the photo of Mewsette watching me post her sketch!

Daily Photo Reprise: Mewsette’s Turn to Supervise, 2012

Mewsette supervises my post of her image.

Mewsette kept a close eye on my work the other day as I posted this sketch that featured her. I wrote in my post:

Right now, Mewsette is watching me compose this post. I wonder what she’s thinking.

I’m thinking that I can’t see fully half of my monitor.

Then I added:

But one of the things I’ve always liked about painting animals is that they never tell me what I’ve painted doesn’t look like them. I don’t take this to mean they like it, though.

Mewsette studies the sketch.

Not sure where Mewsette’s opinion fell on this sketch; she is universally pleasant, though I don’t think she’d hesitate to tell the truth in order to spare my feelings.

She continued watching with the same relaxed interest. Look closely at the text in the photo.

Mewsette watches me type a line about her.

“Mewsette is watching what I type as I type it.”

Some days I get the feeling they think what I do is pure drivel.

Perhaps I should be just a little afraid.
