Daily Sketch Reprise: A Sweet Cuddle, 2013

Bean and Sunshine couldn’t have been any sweeter cuddling with their faces together and paws entangled on the bed. Sunshine likes to sleep on his back, and Bean is just like a ball with his toes curled. I saw them on the bed and was so concerned I’d waken them, or they’d be aware of me, or move before I got my drawing stuff, I tiptoed back into my studio and in absolute silence got the sketchpad and grabbed a handy charcoal pencil and held my breath while I sketched. No move from the boys. Mission accomplished.

. . . . . . .

What else was I sketching on this date?

I was all alone in my studio. This was not so bad, since kitties like to play with my things, so I worked and worked without the worry of kitties swatting expensive pastels or pens, or walking across my artwork or swatting at my hands as I worked or stealing my tools.

But I was lonely, and…suspicious. Before too long, curiosity got the better of me and I went to look in my bedroom where I knew there would be cats. All five, totally sacked on the bed. Well, they wouldn’t be going anywhere for a while I could tell. Might as well take a break for a sketch. It’s Jelly Bean, Mewsette, Giuseppe in front, then Mr. Sunshine and Mimi in the back.

Later, I checked again and found an indistinguishable gob of black cats, below, and Mimi came to greet me, spending the rest of the afternoon on my lap, and acting as my paint rag.

I love it when the Four sleep in a pile as they did when they were kittens. Above was what I really saw. Here’s a lighter version so you can distinguish the individuals—though sometimes when they are like this I’m not sure they are truly individuals.

Jelly Bean and Mr. Sunshine decided to hang out on top of the wardrobe today, looking out the window at first until Bean dozed while Mr. Sunshine indulged in a daydream (perhaps about further uses for his tools).

I had wanted to do more with this, visualizing a more complete and detailed sketch, but the first step is a quick sketch to build upon. At that point Bean yawned, got up and stretched and Mr. Sunshine sat up. End of sketch. That’s okay, I like the loose little lines in here, like the curlicue on the back of Sunshine’s neck—I know I was trying to work something out in my mind when I sketched that line, and that’s what happened to it. But those little oddities add interest to a sketch and sometimes they are surprisingly appropriate. This one is just interesting.
