Daily Photo: Something New, To Us

five black cats on cat tree
The “new” cat tree.

I admit, I’m a trash picker. Always have been. Plenty of the things I use each day I pulled from someone’s trash pile somewhere. Why should my cats be any different? Apparently it doesn’t bother them at all as they hopped onto the new find as soon as I had it in the house, before I even had it in the corner. I love that about them and all my cats, that immediate curiosity.

Somebody in the rescue group posted a photo of a cat tree at the curb by a small apartment building last week, and since I was going that direction I decided I’d take a look at it. It looked good, and it fit in the back of my car.

I’ve wanted a nice big multi-level cat tree for years but one just isn’t in the budget, and even with all my ingenuity in making things I haven’t been able to whip one up. We do have a navy blue one in the corner of the kitchen and it has always gotten some use, and still does. It’s been there for at least 20 years, but it’s really only good for napping, not for play. We needed one for play. And for scratching, and stretching. And with the way these characters play, scratch and stretch, sleep in a pile and wrestle at any point, it’s got to be tough and sturdy.

And not just the cost, but the size. My house is tiny, and I am constantly out of space and walking among boxes depending on the time of year, whether I’m filling holiday orders or packing up to go to a weekend festival. I joke about the cats being able to enjoy constant environmental enrichment with the ever-changing jungle of boxes, but they needed something that belonged to them, not always my stuff. I had no idea where I would put this one, but decided I’d clean it up and look for a space for it, and if I couldn’t fit it anywhere I’d donate it to someone else who could use it.

But it approximately fit into this corner, it just meant that I had to give up the corner where I’d always had my working easel and now displayed new artwork. I have sometimes sold things right off that easel, but for the kids to have a place to rest and play, I could give this a try. I’m just not sure this is the one because it’s a little wobbly, and its shelves and crawly spaces are pretty small. So I may be on the lookout for another, and unless this one seems as if it’s unsafe, they have it. And they’ve been using it since this afternoon when I put it there.

  • I have had one like that for 2 years. With Frankie on it, it has gotten wobbly also. I have used small angle brackets and nuts and bolts to brace the towers.

    • These guys leap onto it, that’s what really makes it wobble.
