Featured Daily Sketch: Three Orange Cats Waiting for Dinner, July 7, 2013

From 2013: Back to those cats after Warhol as friends tend to call them. And see, this is why we have art—I can make my black cats into orange…kind of stripey cats, if you can let your imagination wander. I got the idea for this while feeding them dinner, and handling raw cat food I can’t really grab my sketchbook and get them down, but I remembered what I saw and got each of the three, Giuseppe, Bean and Mr. Sunshine, to pose for me, long enough to get the basics down after dinner.

I had originally intended to fill them solidly with black, but decided instead to leave them just as outlines and make several prints which I would color differently. Of course, I ran upstairs to scan this and forgot, but that’s okay, it’s not like I don’t have other chances.

Below is the original scan for this sketch and it wasn’t the color I was visualizing. This is one color that never scans correctly on my scanner, excellent as it is. I have to retouch it each time. But I like both oranges, but not the same. The one at the top is the color I was visualizing, this color is so rich but it’s a little dark.

From 2026: It’s the three brothers getting into things again! Sometimes I forget how often the three of them were together but I do remember it was always inspiring even if I didn’t always get a photo or a sketch of the event. I love it when my kitties look straight up at me and that’s one of my favorite poses to sketch them in. That was actually easier than trying to get a photo of that pose!

Art for Donation

In 2013 when my friend and fellow blogger Robin A.F. Olson found herself in possession of a pile of orange kittens I offered this sketch and another for a $50 donation to her organization.

Here’s an opportunity to help a friend and fellow blogger Robin A.F. Olson, founder of Kitten Associates Inc., raise funds to help more kittens—buy a piece of art by making a donation! Right now she seems to have an overload of orange kittens so I’m offering three very orange daily sketches.

Daily Sketches 2011 to 2015

I think I accomplished what I'd set out to do three years ago today, a challenge to me and entertainment and enjoyment for you: to create a quick sketch of my cats each day as a way to practice and experiment, and present the sketch on that day with no editing, no waiting, no excuses, just to do the sketch and share it.
