Daily Photo: Checking Her Territory

What mysteries like hidden between this tree's big roots?
What mysteries like hidden between this tree’s big roots?

Mimi may only be outdoors for a few minutes, and not even every day, but she has an important task of correspondence when we’re in the yard. She spends quite a bit of time finding messages left around the yard and responding. Not all messages are they smelly ones from unneutered male cats, in fact most of them are face rubs and claw scratches, to which she replies with a thorough face rub or a good scratch. In between finding those and enjoying and checking the view from her favorite spots in the yard she has a pretty full agenda out there.

Technically the tree above is not in “our” yard, but it’s still in Mimi’s territory. I wonder if someone took shelter in those big roots last night.

Below, that little upright branch is one heck of a chat room. I think everything that comes through the yard leaves a message on that branch, cut off at a convenient level with a really satisfying edge for everyone.

The cut logs of the tree trunk will be there for a few more weeks, or months. The friend who was to help me cut it up accidentally broke his ankle clearing a downed tree on one of the trails. I’m sure Mimi will never tire of walking along her Tree Trunk Trail. To be honest, neither will I, except that it’s lying atop my asparagus bed, and the bed where I grow early peas.

Save Me From This Madness, 2016

Sunshine Seven
Sunshine Seven

Mr. Sunshine looks as if he’s desperate to get away from all the immaturity happening around him. Dinner, please, now.

I don’t get all 7 in one photo too often, so pardon the blur. From the left: Bean, Sunshine, Giuseppe, Mewsette, Mimi, Basil, Bella.

Mimi gives me some sass about walking on the railing. It’s cold outside!

A Special Visitor

We had a very special visitor today, and Basil was the greeting kitty! Basil doesn’t typically greet people so we know she was special. A friend’s niece Lili visits at holidays and loves the house panthers and whichever other cats happens to be here. She loves animals and wants to have a house full when she grows up. I painted a portrait of Lili’s dog Paige a couple of years ago as well as couple of portraits of Lili’s aunt’s cats and dog. I included a few photos from when she visited last December. So good to see a little girl who loves animals so much!

Find Your Own Bed, 2015

Four black cats who refuse to move.
Four black cats who refuse to move.

I stripped the bed to change it and it was suddenly irresistible. The only place to sleep was on the clean bedspread that hadn’t even been spread on the bed yet. Would you brave these four expressions to not only move them but completely undo their little world?

They are even perfectly, or nearly so, lined up!

All lined up!
All lined up!

Even their mother was in on the act. Mimi had her own spot in order to cover even more of the bed with black cats. I will tell you the hour was late and that I did end up sleeping under all my covers in a freshly made bed before the dawn came.

Even Mimi was part of the act.

Mewsette the Big Little Sister, 2011
Cookie and Mewsette
Cookie and Mewsette

A sweet one from 2011…

Mewsette always makes these little overtures to Cookie, and you can see by Cookie’s reaction that it’s not entirely well-received. You can also see that Mewsette is easily twice as big as Cookie and can take a beating from a senior tortie girl who acts as if she doesn’t need anything. Mewsette apparently loves her little big sister, and knows it’s all just an act.

Cookie doesn’t know, but Mewsette curls up next to her on the bed after Cookie has fallen asleep, and Cookie certainly appreciates Mewsette’s warmth, even if she’s not awake to know it.

Here are a few images of Mewsette keeping watch over Cookie as she slept: Big and Little Sisters and Copy Cats, and cuddling with her when she wasn’t feeling well: A Loyal Sister and Cookie Says Thank You. Cookie did grow to appreciate big, warm, soft Mewsette, as seen in Cookie’s Blessing.

Il Fagiolini
black cat with beans
“Il Fagiolini”

I heard a classical piece entitled “Il Fagiolini” or “The Little Bean”. Exactly! My little Bean is bigger than most beans, but he’s still smaller than all the other beans in the house! And he’s just as cute. And now he has a fancy Italian food name like his brother Giuseppe Basil Verdi.

In Line for the Sun, 2013

In line for the sun.

What are kitties to do when there is only one long strip of sun to enjoy? They conform themselves to the shape. Jelly Bean and Mr. Sunshine settled easily into the strip of sunshine, adjusting as necessary—especially since we all knew it was going to disappear again! Our snow hasn’t begun yet, but we hope everyone is safe and warm as another winter storm rolls through.

Listening to Mom, 2012
Giuseppe attentively listens to Mimi.
Giuseppe attentively listens to Mimi.

Giuseppe is resting but attentive when he and Mimi were resting together in the sun on the landing. I know they were communicating very deeply, and Giuseppe’s golden eyes were glowing as he calmly listened. Was she telling stories of life on the streets? Telling him about his daddy cat? Perhaps giving him tips on how to further woo Mademoiselle Daisy Emerald Marguerite? Perhaps the relative flavor of chipmunk versus field mouse?

Mimi loves her outdoor time and I can tell you Momma Kat that there are days I’d never step outside if it wasn’t for her. She lets me know when I need to take a break and get over myself.
