TNR Instead of Culling for Australian Stray and Feral Cats

TNR instead of culling for Australian stray and feral cats.

If you’ve followed the news for cats out of Australia, you’ve probably read about the “cat culls” performed to preserve wildlife, wholesale killing of cats in certain areas even though evidence shows they don’t pose any threat to the wildlife. And it’s also proven that killing populations of cats does not “get rid of cats,” it only leaves room for more cats to move in, so the whole operation is pointless as well as inhumane.

“The national Australian government, along with many state governments, have been pursuing large-scale culling of unowned outdoor cats for decades. The goal of eradicating feral and stray cats from large portions of the landscape, even whole islands, is to protect the native wildlife, which many Australians believe are being threatened to extinction by cat predation. Despite heavy evidence that cat predation has little effect on overall prey animal populations, anti-cat hysteria seems to be the norm throughout the country.”

Alley Cat Rescue reported some positive news for cats out of Australia for these cats in New South Wales, the fifth largest state in Australia, of a five-year plan for TNR and low-cost spay and neuter. Read the whole article on Alley Cat Rescue’s blog.

Alley Cat Rescue is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the welfare of all cats: domestic, stray, abandoned, and feral. ACR advocates for humane nonlethal control of feral cats. For more information, visit their website http://www.saveacat.org.

I subscribe to a variety of reading lists to constantly further my knowledge of health and welfare for cats and other pets, domestic animals and wildlife. I occasionally publish press releases I think my readers will appreciate, and I share them by choice with no compensation. When I am occasionally compensated for a post I clearly note that is a “sponsored post”.

Great Rescues Day Book

Each month features one of my commissioned portraits of a feline or felines and their rescue story along with a kitty quote on the left page, and on the right page the month name with enough lines for all possible dates, with standard holidays and animal-themed observances and events. Great Rescues also includes a mini cat-care book illustrated with my drawings including information on finding strays or orphaned kittens, adopting for the first time or caring for a geriatric cat, a list of household toxins and toxic plants, or helping stray and feral cats and beginning with TNR.

Each book includes also 10 sheets of my “22 Cats” decorative notepaper with a collage of all the portraits in black and white so you can make your own notes or write special notes to friends.

The portraits in this book, collected as a series, won both a Certificate of Excellence and a Muse Medallion in the 2011 Cat Writers’ Association Annual Communication Contest, as well as the 22 Cats Notepaper mentioned below.

    I agree with Brian’s Dad.

  • Sure, but the koalas spend ninety percent of their time pooping and sleeping

  • Unless they drop the killing of cats country wide I will still gladly tell everyone I know that Australia sucks.

    • Indeed–imagine living there and loving cats! I just hope they are honest about the results of the five-year TNR program and don’t go back and say they still need to kill cats. If it becomes a trend then I’ll applaud.
