September Featured Artwork and Desktop Calendar: “Evening in the Cat Book Library”

Even though I sketched this in February, it is so autumnal and seasonal with all those muted earth tones along with bright leaf colors—and it has BOOKS! Just right for going back to school, or back to work after vacation, or just getting back to things after all the summer fun we’ve had. I’ve been waiting for September to come around so I could feature this artwork.
Here’s what I had to say when I first posted it:
Bean washes his face while Giuseppe surveys the room, sitting in the cat book library.
In my office downstairs I have the triple dresser I’d mentioned in our last family portrait that holds my collection of cat books. It’s a favorite place to hang out, good view, and a cat can even see out the windows from there. It may be a little confusing in the background, but there is a mirror behind the books.
I enjoyed watching the boys pass the time in feline ways, looking at each other, looking around the room, and having little baths, since it was after dinner. As usual, when they are active, I sketched Bean first on the left as he washed his face, then Giuseppe as he looked out into the room. they were actually mirroring each other for much of this activity but that looks funnier in the photos which I’ll share one day soon—synchronized feline relaxation techniques.
It surprised me how many of the books had yellow spines, more than are here. I had forgotten with these pens that the ink is only water proof only after I let the sketch dry completely, at least 20 minutes. I started painting purple into the boys then actually blotted it off, but was even a little too soon with some of the other colors. It turned out okay though. Mostly because I was very carefully supervised.

This month’s desktop calendar
I’ve worked this image into a desktop calendar for you to enjoy and use for the entire month. Looking at the downloads from previous months and averaging out which dimensions fit which devices, I have reduced the number of variations from 12 to three. It was very time-consuming to create all the variations with new devices arriving all the time, so I have one for horizontal monitors/screens, one for square monitors/screens, and one that should fit the dimensions of nearly all mobile devices.
If these sizes don’t work for your device, or if you have problems, please let me know. Often I can troubleshoot the reason an image won’t download or won’t load on your device, but if I just can’t figure it out I can just email it to you and hope that works.
How to download and use your desktop calendar
- Click on one of the images below that matches the dimensions of your monitor to open the image in a new page.
- For desktop computers and laptops, right-click on that image and on a desktop computer choose “save as desktop wallpaper” or “save as background” or whichever option your operating system gives you to be able to do this. You may also simply save it to your hard drive and set it as your background from there.
- For mobile devices, download the image to your gallery then choose it as your wallpaper—this is slightly different on all devices.
