Commissioned Portrait: Cameo
I have painted multiple portraits for this couple since we met in 1993, but I’ve never featured Cameo, the second portrait I painted for them all those years ago. Through the years I managed to rephotograph nearly all the older portraits that I’d photographed on film, but somehow I missed their lovely pure white Persian kitty who sat right there and watched them each day as they left for work, and greeted them each day as they came home.
While they talked about other poses for Cameo, trying to find something that felt more universal to them, in the end they decided on that daily greeting which is how they thought of her through the day. They may have had some help in that decision because I always advise people to choose the memory they love best, the one that always comes to mind, even if their animal companion isn’t that old, because that’s the one that makes them smile. I am still in touch with them and one of these days I’ll get a to rephotograph Cameo’s portrait, but just in case I never do, I wanted to share her even though the usual detail images I usually share are blurry and the overall color is inaccurate.
Portraits of their other cats, and about the people, serial adopters and rescuers
The couple had each grown up with pets but those animals had always gone outdoors and as a young married couple living in an apartment they were sure a pet wouldn’t be happy. A friend had Persian cats and in visits they were so impressed with the cats’ looks and personality that they adopted, over time, three of them.
I first met them a few months after they had lost that first Persian kitty, Flint, below, and he became one of the first portraits I painted the year I began this business in 1993.
I also met Cameo and Scout below, and in time painted their portraits too.
After them have come Felix, Christy, Marsha and Scruffy and I’m currently working on Amy.
Felix was their first rescue cat after they’d lost Scout, and their first mixed-breed cat. They had been so impressed by the Persian cats they met and lived with, and while they moved from an apartment to a home and didn’t need to be concerned about space, they also each worked long hours and traveled frequently. The Persian cats they adopted from their breeder fit well into their lifestyle and they weren’t sure about taking on a shelter or rescued cat whose needs they might not be able to meet. Until Felix, that is.
Since Felix they’ve adopted several rescued cats in about the same way as Felix—photos passed around the office, or a flyer, or an e-mail with a story. Following that for years they maintained a feral colony behind their house, fell in love with all the residents and took in any who were amenable to it, sometimes beginning with just cold days, then a full winter, then staying inside permanently.
I’ve also done another portrait for them of yet another long-haired tabby rescue kitty named Christie, who is also featured in Great Rescues, and you can read about her in You Are the Most Beautiful, Precious Girl.
They hold the record for the greatest number of commissioned portraits from one household.
One time when I visited there were two rescues lounging indoors and four cats who they fed outside the door on the patio who had been spayed and neutered through the Homeless Cat Management Team, a TNR program based in Pittsburgh. I was not surprised to see there was even a water bowl that could be heated for winter use. After a visit to them I wrote about their little outdoor family. I offer gift certificates for portraits in any denomination beginning at $50.00, which is the basic cost of a small monochromatic portrait.
The certificate itself is 8.5″ x 11″ and features a collage of portrait images with the recipient’s and giver’s names, printed on parchment cover stock. The whole thing is packaged in a pocket folder and includes a brochure, a letter from me to the recipient and several business cards.The certificate package can be easily mailed or wrapped as a gift and shipped directly to your recipient.

Certificates are good for up to one year after issue.

I prefer to look over the work and price the portrait according to how much work will go into it, as described above, but you can either set a budget or get started by purchasing a certificate for yourself or as a gift.

- “Certificate A” is for a minimum-size 8 x 10 black and white or monochromatic portrait with one subject.
- “Certificate B” is for a minimum-size 8 x 10 color portrait with one subject.
- Choose “A” or “B” depending on whether your portrait is black and white or color.
- If your portrait will be larger or have more subjects, add $50 or $100 or more to your certificate value with the drop-down below.

Great Rescues Day Book:
Portraits, Rescue Stories, Holidays and Events, Essential Feline Information, All in One Book
Each month features one of my commissioned portraits of a feline or felines and their rescue story along with a kitty quote on the left page, and on the right page the month name with enough lines for all possible dates, with standard holidays and animal-themed observances and events. Great Rescues also includes a mini cat-care book illustrated with my drawings including information on finding strays or orphaned kittens, adopting for the first time or caring for a geriatric cat, a list of household toxins and toxic plants, or helping stray and feral cats and beginning with TNR.
