Daily Photo: Hamlet is Back Home!

Hamlet is back home! He’s moving kind of slowly and really wants affection, but he finally relaxed and settled down for some naps. Not bad for a former feral who I could barely touch a few years ago and even recently had to be careful of his fears of being confined in any way, including by two hands on him instead of only one, coming home from nearly two days at a totally alien place. I was concerned he would hide but he knew exactly where he was and that he was safe.

His fever was still higher than normal and no appetite last night. Because they knew there could be toxoplasmosis in the environment—Basil had an active infection in 2020 and Mimi a latent infection in 2021—and Hamlet is a purrfessional mouser, they decided to start Clindamycin, the antibiotic for toxoplasmosis, last night (Tuesday). Hamlet’s temperature was normal this morning, he started eating and drinking and used his litterbox, so they decided he could finish recovering at home. We are still waiting for the results of his Fever of Unknown Origins panel about a week from now, but his response to Clindamycin may be the answer.

He will still have to finish his Clindamycin prescription, but otherwise treatment is finished.

Aside from that, the most exciting news was that he was a very good boy despite his fearfulness, he never gave anyone any trouble. They were very careful where he was and how he was handled, but everyone described him as “sweet.” I know he is, but it’s wonderful to see that others can see this in him too! He was mildly sedated the whole time, but he was awake and responded well to both handling and affection.

I’m so glad he’s home and on the mend. Once we can clear this up it’s time for all of them to go for their own individual vet visits with my regular veterinarian, exams, get their vaccines updated, and do the senior stuff for Bella and Hamlet who are 12, and Morty who is 10. Sienna and Mariposa are 9 and I’m debating having any extra tests done at their age too. I’m also pricing out pet insurance and finding that with the premiums below a certain level the reimbursements will actually save money, in some cases quite a bit, enough to make it worthwhile.
