Marketplace: New Feline Artwork

I’d planned a few more feline paintings but I’m more than pleased with the two I did paint during this September’s 30 Paintings in 30 Days painting challenge. One was recent, and one from many years ago.
Mimi in the Laundry Shade, watercolor, 6″ x 6″

This was painted from a photo I took in August 2015 and many people commented on it when I posted it. I’ve always wanted to do a simple little painting of it: my colorful dresses and skirts moving gently in the breeze, the bricks in the patio outside my basement door, the bright sun and shadows, Mimi relaxing on the concrete step in the shade of the laundry. Just a nice memory of a simple summer morning. Since others seemed to like it as much as me it was even more of an incentive.

I painted this in watercolors on my 6 x 9 pad of 140 lb. watercolor paper. I enjoy painting on that little watercolor pad, the perfect weight, texture and size, and I’m so glad I found it. just working with it makes me more confident.

Late Winter Sunbath, pastel, 6.5 x 9.5

I used this as an illustration for my essay “Too Much at Once” two weeks ago. Pondering my remarks for Pet Memorial Sunday had me remembering this time and an essay came from that. I also remembered this photo and this time.
I’d always wanted to paint this photo of my orange boy, Allegro. I took the photo in 1993 or 1994, and it’s been on my mind all this time.
I wanted not so much to paint a portrait of Allegro as I wanted to capture that moment that was so much Allegro in his quiet, understated self, having wandered around and found a warm spot in the sun, decided to drop everything and enjoy the sun while it lasted. He sat down between the window and the plant on a cold late winter afternoon and had a nap. I worked it loosely with lots of extra colors to capture the feeling of streaming sunlight. I initially cropped it much tighter, focusing on him, but then I lost the light, the reflections on the window, the sun on the plant, and all the things in addition to Allegro that I loved about the scene.

The 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge
I participated in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days painting challenge for the month of September. As in January, I didn’t expect to create something each day, even every other day would still be great. I managed to create 12 paintings plus one commissioned illustration. Most paintings are small, but I’ve tried to vary the subject, medium and size. We had a lot of late nights for me to get the paintings done that I did paint, and, of course, Mimi was right with me the entire time, as you see below.

Our previous cat — who was all black, as was her predecessor (Ceso) and successor, Simon — was named Mimi.
Interesting! My Mimi is named for the lead female in the opera La Boheme.
