While your spring blooming plants are just getting started, add some color to your garden with garden flags!

Solar light garden gnomes!
Solar light garden gnomes!

Yesterday I was barefoot in the yard taking care of some trimming and visually planning, and today it’s well below freezing with six inches of fresh snow on the ground. My solar lights look like garden gnomes with their snow hats!

But spring is just over a week away. Plus, I left my sample garden flags out in my sunny front yard all winter this year just to see how they’d do year round in this chaotic weather we’ve been experiencing. Some have been out since July 2020, the rest since June 2021, but all are out there flapping in the gale this morning and shaking off the ice that built up overnight. The oldest show some signs of fading, and only two of the oldest show any sign of fraying.

So don’t worry about putting them out too early, or leaving them out all year. I knew they were good for a year or two in full sun during temperate months, and it’s only been the test of time to find they are durable enough that I can pretty much guarantee them for two years in all weather.
