Morning Tea With Peaches.

This photo was taken on March 13, 2008.

Peaches was such a little girly girl that it was easy to want to place her in Victorian settings with ruffles and flowers. I never had the chance to set her up in anything like that and still don’t have the photo studio I’ve always dreamed of, but I do have some interesting artifacts here and there that add to my everyday photos.

This was one of them, at dawn on a late winter morning, yellow light streaming straight in the door from the sun just come over the horizon in early 2008, washing the 40s-era handmade wooden cabinet, the vintage white-with-blue enamel teapot, and Peaches as she looks at me intently, expecting more breakfast perhaps. She may have come late to the party and loved another before she came to me, but she never doubted for a moment that she belonged here or that she could shamelessly try to manipulate me. That expectant expression on her face brooks no refusal of her wishes. I adored her every move. I know she adored me too.

Many people think they need to adopt an animal as a “toddler” in order for it to truly bond with them. Cats like Peaches proved that wrong right out of the cat carrier.

And many people are afraid of losing any pet, so adopting a pet that’s already lived half or more of its life seems to ensure the loss will come sooner than usual. Don’t worry about how old they are; I’ve lost young cats. Older pets have love to give every minute they are alive, and our lives are the richer for it.
