Featured Daily Sketch: Sunny Windowsill, June 11, 2013

From 2013: The sun is so bright on this sunny windowsill, and then, of course, they are black, and the cats who sit there are nearly always silhouettes, which I enjoy experimenting with. I don’t even mind that my marker isn’t as juicy as it could be; I used its relative dark and light abilities as part of the sketch, since Mimi and Bean aren’t completely silhouetted but have direct and reflected highlights on them. Definitely should pick up a juicer black brush marker, though.

From 2026: I so clearly see Mimi and Jelly Bean here, not just their distinct shapes, but the setting as well. I’m SO GLAD I captured these moments in sketches, even more than photos, for the visual/emotional connection with greater depth than photos. Looking at this sketch in 2017 2018 2024 2025 (I’ve shared this a few other times and concur with what I thought then) I think I appreciate even more how it turned out. I like the line quality on the figures and objects, I like how I filled them as well, and I really like the leaves outside the window. All of those things are easy to over do, to try to refine them but just work them too much. I like it.

I did pick up a few juicier black markers too.

And I think this would go nicely with the ideal I have for some new tiles!

Where to find “Sunny Windowsill”

I didn’t put this design on a tile—yet. Maybe a glass suncatcher? Thinking of also making a suncatcher with “In Afternoon Sun” from the other day. They would make a nice pair.

The original sketch is still available. Let me know if you’re interested!
