My prescheduled posts haven’t been posting correctly and my featured artwork post posted yesterday, as a rescue story, so I thought I’d choose a piece of artwork that’s been on my mind and I wanted to share anyway for this week’s featured artwork.

I painted “Mimi in the Laundry Shade” from a photo I took in August 2015. I’d always wanted to do a simple little painting of it: my colorful dresses and skirts moving gently in the breeze, the bricks in the patio outside my basement door, the bright sun and shadows, Mimi relaxing on the concrete step in the shade of the laundry, stretching herself out on the cool concrete. Just a nice memory of a simple summer morning. Since others seemed to like the photo as much as me it was even more of an incentive.

I finally painted it in early September 2017 and I’ve been thinking of it as we hang out the laundry and work on our little courtyard out there by the garden. Soon leaves will fall on the bricks and those warm, even hot, August and September mornings will be a memory. Today I washed and hung out the quilt for October and thought of this painting and knew it was time. It’s hard to believe it’s been six years since I took the photo, and four years since I painted it—it seems like yesterday, or like last year. Now the neighbor’s trees have grown so tall that we don’t get this much sun there anymore, especially this late in September, until the leaves have all fallen, so I’m glad I caught the memory while it was fresh.

I painted this in watercolors on my 6 x 9 pad of 140 lb. watercolor paper, and the final size is 6 x 6. I enjoy painting on that little watercolor pad, the perfect weight, texture and size, and I’m so glad I found it. Just working with it makes me more confident. I participated in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days painting challenge for the month of September 2017. I didn’t expect to create something each day, even every other day would still be great. Most paintings were small, and I went down the list of ones I’ve been wanting to do. This painting was at the very top.

Where to find this artwork

The original painting is sold, but I offer a variety of digital and canvas prints, a greeting card and a note card, and I’m working out gift items like tiles and a few other ideas. You can find the artwork on Portraits of Animals. And if you are interested in the gift items I’m making with this art you can search Portraits of Animals for “Mimi in the Laundry Shade” or just “Laundry Shade” and you’ll find what’s available. I’ll also be featuring them here too.
