Daily Sketch Reprise: Love Cats
Mewsette and Mr. Sunshine were bathing each other on my chair (yet more chair stealing today), and I sketched around, holding my place with my pencils until I caught the moment when, as Mewsette washed her brother’s face, he slipped his paws around her shoulders. That’s sweet enough, but when I finished the sketch and leaned it up on my drafting table to get a slight distance view and impression of it I saw the heart shape. How sweet could they be? What a lucky moment.
Where to find this artwork
I just love this sketch so much I want to feature it on its own.
I’ve placed it on round keepsake boxes with the vibrant Caribbean blue trim available in the Handmade Gifts section of Portraits of Animals.
Now that I have other parts of my studio set up I’m working on some other ideas with it on textiles.
Next year it will become a small notecard, for a Valentine perhaps.
But for now, just enjoy my Love Cats!
Keepsake Set
I’ve also made “Mother and Daughter, Sun and Shadow” into a keepsake box using the same trim color, and they make a cute little set.

Green Cat, Blue Cat, 2012
Giuseppe and Bean were hanging together on the cabinet, waiting for something to happen. I wasn’t doing anything, not sure what they were expecting. In the end, I think they had a nap. That wasn’t bad for a summer afternoon.
I’m trying some of the same styles I use in in hard pastels. I can blend a little bit more in these and I like the softer coverage and feathered edges on the green and blue. We’ll see where I take it—if only I hadn’t been so distracted by their movements and started with one face and ended with another…they move all the time and usually it doesn’t bother me, I fill my eyes with my first vision of them and work as quickly as possible from that, but not when I’m distracted. Next time, I’ll move on to Cubism.

Mr. Sunshine Does the Twist, 2012
Well, he was bathing and really twisting this way and that, interesting to try to catch him.
Still experimenting with the old pastel pencils which are all different brands and ages but not a big variety of color, though that’s part of the challenge. I’m creating shape and volume with color rather than just with hue (relative dark and light).

The first one is absolutely beautiful.
Thank you, Momma Kat. That’s one of the mysteries of starting out with two black cats bathing and just letting it happen.
