August Featured Artwork and Desktop Calendar: “Mewsette’s Tail”

I considered a “back to school” style of art for this desktop calendar since everyone seems to be going back to school right now, but I decided I wanted a sketch with bold summery colors for this hot month of August. So how is orange and purple? One of my favorite combinations, and while this could be considered autumnal I’ve always thought of this sketch as a summer sketch.
Which is interesting because it’s actually from the beginning of May in 2014, but I remember we were having some pretty hot weather that week. This depicts the color of the kitchen with the morning sun shining in. Here’s what I said about this sketch when I drew it.
Mewsette slaps her tail back and forth so enticingly, Bean simply cannot resist.
Giuseppe, Bean and Mewsette were hanging out on the cabinet in the center of the kitchen so they looked like only silhouettes against the morning sunlight through the back door. I really liked their activity and the big silhouettes plus the long shadows on the varnished cabinet were interesting varieties of textures. I just wasn’t sure about the colors since they were slipping around, I just wanted to capture the warm colors in the background and the cool colors in the highlights. I think I got that!
I like the simplicity of it, three cat silhouettes, their shadows, the door. It brings to mind the photos of them in the kitchen I often share during the day, doing what they do, interacting as the close family of siblings they are.
This art is also offered as a “New Member Thank You” on my Portraits of Animals website.
I actually had a new piece of art in mind for this August, but I just couldn’t get it finished. Next year maybe.
This month’s desktop calendar
I finally figured out how to use these images as desktop calendars. The calendars need to fit both horizontal and vertical orientation, and normally I’d use the same art for all of them, somehow modified. In this case I decided to use The Goddess for the two larger horizontal layouts, and The Roundest Eyes for the smaller vertical layouts. If these sizes don’t work for your device, or if you have problems, please let me know. Often I can troubleshoot the reason an image won’t download or won’t load on your device, but if I just can’t figure it out I can just email it to you and hope that works.
How to download and use your desktop calendar
- Click on one of the images below that matches the dimensions of your monitor to open the image in a new page.
- For desktop computers and laptops, right-click on that image and on a desktop computer choose “save as desktop wallpaper” or “save as background” or whichever option your operating system gives you to be able to do this. You may also simply save it to your hard drive and set it as your background from there.
- For mobile devices, download the image to your gallery then choose it as your wallpaper—this is slightly different on all devices.

I can’t believe that it is already time for school to begin again either! Summer always flies by so fast. I love this drawing! Your cats are so playful – it is easy to see that even in silhouette.
Seems like it was just July 4 which always seems like the beginning of summer. It seemed endless when we were kids! I’ve always like this one with purple and orange, and the silhouettes.
