Daily Photo: Dramatic Lighting

All this lovely sunshine we’ve been having has been glorious! I actually had to shut my cafe curtains for a few minutes while at my computer because it shone right in the window, and after all this cloudy weather my eyes just aren’t ready for it! Bella made the most of the lighting. I really like all the reflected colors on the side of her face. Here’s another dramatic view of lovely Bella, who knows how to pose.

Good morning! Apparently a certain family of housepanthers think vegan banana walnut bread from the Homeless Cat Management Team’s spaghetti dinner is an appropriate feline treat, but actually it’s my breakfast. I love it when they line up like this. From the left it’s Mr. Sunshine, Jelly Bean, Mewsette, Giuseppe and their little mom Mimi.

Looking Up, 2015

Basil spends a lot of time by the basement door now that it’s open nearly every day. Everything out the is SO EXCITING. And it’s RIGHT THERE. He just can’t get over it. But when he looks up at me and the light hits his eyes just right they look like pure, warm amber.
I also see that he achieved a membership in the One White Whisker Club for his first birthday.

A Busy Day at Work, 2011

It began in the morning with the boys slacking off in an after-breakfast nap so the senior torties had to take over the greeting detail at the door when a customer came in. Kelly waits her turn as befits a less-senior tortie, but it’s a big step for a kitty who used to vaporize when a human other than me approached (even me sometimes if I was moving too fast).
Every human has to be approved before they can approach Mama Bernadette. This guy has been dropping off work for about ten years so he was okay.
Then Big Brother showed up and while Mama Bernadette finished up with a conference call. Jelly Bean made the most of his visit. Uncle Mark has big hands and they can cover a lot of a kitty at one time, and he knows just how to scratch a kitty’s back too.

A little later in Mark’s visit he sat down again and Giuseppe, a little less brash than Jelly Bean in his approach, tried to make it look as if he was desperate for some pets as well. My brother is one whose hand lifts and pets the cat without his even realizing, and though he’s 6’4″ with a heavy step and a deep voice, my cats have always trusted him immediately.

Then it was naptime all over again, Giuseppe settling down first, and Mr. Sunshine on top of him, necessitating Mom’s mid-afternoon break since she couldn’t work with the boys all over her papers (she moved them, but they came right back).

After their turn came Jelly Bean who is a little smaller and useful for holding papers.

And finally, Cookie, exhausted, settled where she’d make the most impact.

How much work do you suppose I got done today?
(About as much as I ever get done…a very sweet little memory of my household on a typical day in 2011.)

Straw Hat Day, and More, 2014

Jelly Bean will snuggle up with just about anyone—or anything, like my straw hat which another certain black cat had knocked down from atop the entertainment center. Entertainment for Mr. Sunshine, that is. The hat landed on a stack of stuff that’s been part of the feline entertainment center lately, and where they can nap and also look out the door. Jelly Bean usually recruits a relative to nap with him, but here he made do with the hat. The hat did not try to wrestle with him unprovoked.
A couple of years ago, in approximately the same spot, Mr. Sunshine himself became the subject of a cat and a hat, and a mat…

Black…Mats? Hats? Cats? 2012

I make the mistake of curling up for a nap on a box that happens to say “black mats”, and mom gets all excited and starts tossing things on top of me.
You can’t see, but first she tossed her black straw hat on top of me because she’d worn it that day. Then she decided it wasn’t enough so she tossed her big straw hat on top of that because “you could see it”. Why would you want to?
Then she laughed.
Then she got the camera.
And I will always be remembered for this.
Thanks, mom.
And then, of course, this is how those hats end up down there…

The Cat and The Hats, 2013

Where did these hats come from?
I knocked them down a while ago!
Could it be that my human
Keeps replacing them just so?
How DID they get back up here?
I knocked them down a couple of times!
It’s all becoming very clear
That human has set me up for rhymes!
Hey, it’s National Poetry Month! Might as well have a rhyming post that’s also a little Seussical!
And Mr. Sunshine really did knock my hats down a couple of times. They were in his way.
Really, here’s another thing that hasn’t changed. Those are my sun hats to protect my eyes when I’m out walking or painting on a very sunny day. I try to keep them looking nice, but Mr. Sunshine has other ideas. All but the one I was wearing were on the floor when I came back home from errands today.

Nothing to See Here, 2013

Looks like Jelly Bean is about to knight Giuseppe with that characteristic paw on the ear.
Or perhaps they are about to cuddle with their paws wrapped around each other.
Or the boys are getting set up for a little wrestling match, one of Bean and Giuseppe’s favorite activities.
Whatever it is they plan on doing, they’d really like it if I left them alone so they could carry on without some human trying to get all the attention with her stupid pictures.
Okay, guys, I’ll go away, but just be careful what you ask for!

Interlocking Kitties, 2012

Giuseppe and Jelly Bean perform an interesting mid-nap conjoinment of paws and faces and tails. It’s another one of their gratuitous displays of brotherly sweetness that makes my day go by in an instant.
