Cats for Adoption: Auntie Comes In For Good

calico tabby cat
Auntie is ready for life with humans!

Do feral cats ever decide on their own to come inside? Yes they do—and Auntie, living outdoors for at least five years and cared for by rescuer Margo at her workplace, has decided she is ready for a real forever home! And sometimes a cat who trusts you but is not necessarily friendly will surprise you with how they turn around and ask for help.

It can be difficult to determine the family relations among cats who live outdoors, but as nearly as Margo can determine among the three cats who she regularly feeds and cares for behind the building where she works, two kitties hang together and one kitty is the mom of the other. The third kitty she presumes is the sister of the one and therefore the aunt of the other, so she came to call her Auntie. Kind of a loner where other cats are concerned, Auntie was always ready to greet Margo at feeding times, follow along and rub on her legs though it took three years to pet her, and it’s hard not to fall in love with a kitty like that. Last winter during the polar vortex Margo brought Auntie into the building at work for a few days and Auntie seemed to appreciate that, then she was done with it.

But just a few weeks ago she saw Auntie was coughing, then she wasn’t in her usual spot for a few days, and when she showed up she wasn’t eating. Margo knew something was wrong, trapped her and took her to her veterinarian and they began treatment for a URI and a few other complications, like constipation, with Auntie set up in a cage in the garage. Auntie seemed to recover then took a turn for the worse, much worse, with a temperature of 104.7 and rising and landed in the emergency hospital. She was treated and then came home to spend some time with Margo and at her veterinarian. An ultrasound showed something strange in her abdomen and lymphoma was suspect, and it was diagnosed as a type of lymphoma called Reactive Lymphoid Hyperplasia which is benign. The temperature was due to an infection. As the temperature slowly receded and Auntie gained strength Margo decided to move Auntie from the garage to the spare bedroom, and seeing that Auntie seemed quite settled decided to try to find her a home.

Really, Auntie may have been hiding because she was ill, but she clearly came back and sought out Margo and asked for help. She probably had her eye on Margo all those years, and when she needed help she knew who to ask.

Auntie is recovered from her infection and shows no interest at all in the outdoors—not even in looking out the window! She is spayed and up to date on her shots. She is excellent with her litterbox, and is a shy girl that would do best in a home that is on the quiet side. And she is exceptionally pretty! If you are interested in giving Auntie a nice, quiet forever home, please contact Margo at [email protected].

amazon wish list for kittens
The Amazon Wish List for our group’s foster kittens.

Margo also just fostered and found homes for Marshmallow and her eight kittens, several other kittens, and hosts this Amazon.com wish list.

I’ve lost count of the number of kittens in foster among our volunteers, and August is usually the month with the highest surrender numbers at Pittsburgh shelters. Part of the mission with TNR is to not return the kittens—once we’ve rescued them we socialize them and put them up for adoption through the ARL Foster Finder program or through FosterCat or Frankie’s Friends.

Many rescuers pay out of pocket for veterinary care and food but the costs of raising even the average litter of four healthy kittens is more than many people have, and many rescues have greater needs, like Auntie. If you can help with just one purchase from the kitten wish list on Amazon.com you’d make some kittens and a rescuer very happy.

And if you’d just rather buy a gift card or make a donation, I have a reward for you, below—follow the instructions to make a donation to HCMT or Frankie’s Friends and I’ll send you a gift certificate to my shop.

Treats For Homeless Cats And Caretakers

Can’t adopt? Foster! Can’t foster? Donate or volunteer.

There are so many ways you can help cats who need homes and care. You may not have room to adopt another cat, but can foster a cat or kitten for a few weeks. If not that, you can volunteer at a shelter or with a rescue, or donate. You do this because you love your cat, and by doing so you help all cats. No matter which of these actions you take, you help to save a life, and make life better for all cats.

  • Adopt one of the cats I’ve posted here, or from any shelter or rescue near you, or from Petfinder, to open up a space for another cat to be rescued and fostered.
  • Offer to foster cats or kittens for a shelter or rescue near you.
  • Volunteer at a shelter or rescue.
  • Find a group of volunteers who work with homeless cats and help them with their efforts.
  • Donate to a shelter or rescue near you.

If you can foster kittens or adults cats to help prepare them for a forever home, please run to your nearest shelter and find a cat who needs you! Anyone can help with this effort at any level, even if all you do is donate to a shelter or rescue so they can help to pay for the food or medications needed for their foster, or the spay/neuter/veterinary care during a clinic.
