Vintage Photo: Waiting on the Deck, 1994

Kublai on the deck waiting for me to head out into the yard, 1994.

We are headed out to the yard on a spring morning! Kublai was my backyard cat then, and on a Saturday morning in spring the only place you’d find us is in our back yard. Both of us were bursting with getting out there to do our thing, me planting and yardwork, Kublai inspecting everything. I opened the door and followed him out. He ran to the corner of the deck where he could see the yard—we didn’t have those nice steps across the deck from the door yet—and then waited for me to catch up. YOu can see by his tail he was very happy.

The lighting is interesting in this photo, the warm morning light and the reflections from the wood as he looked at me. Kublai had pale blue-green eyes, but the lighting makes them look gold. His expression is still so familiar to me, all these years later.

It’s surprising how little the routine has varied from one cat to the next through the years as we’ve headed out the same door to the same deck and yard, even when both Cookie and Namir came outdoors with me, they did the same waiting on the deck for me, then accompanying me around the yard, just like Moses before them and Mimi after them. I guess the members of my feline family have passed it down the generations.

Photos From the Archives and Vintage Photos

Photos pulled “From the Archives” were taken by one or another digital camera of mine between 2002 and, well, yesterday, but usually they are older than that, and I had never had the chance to feature them. Vintage Photos are from my film archives back to 1983 when I purchased my Pentax K-1000 camera. They’re a fun way to “introduce” other members of my feline family who came and went before I began blogging, and to illustrate my feline family in general from days gone by.

A Sunny Room

This photograph was taken in 1983, when I first got my camera and began photographing with black and white film. Kublai, the kitty who rescued me in college and truly began my life as an animal artist, was only about two years old. Read more and purchase.
