Vintage Photo: My Studio Window, Spring 1995
My first black cat, Kublai, sits on the windowsill in the sun in my studio, watching me work, sometime in March or April 1995.
Seeing my cats on the windowsill of the room I designated as my studio has been a view I’ve enjoyed since I moved in here. It’s my spare bedroom, and though it hasn’t always been completely an art studio as it is now for all that time, it was always my room for creative work. And my cats have always been available for supervisory duties. And as we know, seeing my cats in the sun has also inspired a lot of artwork.
It’s also one of the sunniest rooms in the house, especially when I first moved in and hadn’t planted my river birches near the corner of the house to give light shade to the room. My spruce, just outside, was then, as now, an avian high-rise, but was young enough to have green branches all around where now a good bit of the shaded sides are bare of needles.
But watching my cats sunbathe was always one of my favorite things to see, as I looked up from whatever I was doing to see one or more on the windowsill. I have very few photos of Kublai because he was usually riding around on my shoulders or he sat next to me in whatever I was doing, so these good photos are precious. And on this date not only did I have my heart cat there to observe, but in the photo above you’ll see there is another cat to the right of him.
Never far from me then or any time later in all the 20 years she was with me, Cookie, likely learning from Kublai as the one to grow into his spot as my best friend a year or so after he left us, and always near. And both still near, in my heart.

Looks like last year I was so happy Mimi was feeling better I shared a post just of photos of her, then another of Basil and Bella watching the squirrel outside the window.
Fun in the Sun, 2015
There’s just no telling what warm spring sun and warm rough wood can do to a kitty! Mimi has a great time rolling around and stretching on the steps, and then tries to deny it.
Here she rolls herself backward for her next move…
Here I go!
How did I get down here?!
Where am I now?
Here is where she tries to act as if this indignity never happened.
Unfortunately, we have to come inside now and then.

Predators, and The Squirrel, 2015
Wow, that sweet little Bella can look pretty fierce when she’s on the hunt, even if the squirrel is outside the window on the ground eating bird seed. She is sending death rays his way.
And then Smokie is trying to decide…barbecued? stir fried? raw?
The squirrel has decided to keep a safe distance from the window!
And though you may not think it’s the most exciting video to watch, Bella was rapt at the squirrel’s activities outside the window, he was mad because the feeder is doing what it’s supposed to do—pull a cover over the feeding ports with his weight, and when he runs off she gives chase—up the stairs! Bella enjoyed the rerun watching herself watching the squirrel.
Seems like it was a day for wildlife drama!

The Chipmunk Drama, 2012
An exciting moment in the lives of three black cats.
Mimi was already at the window, Mr. Sunshine joined her and Giuseppe leaped off my lap when she sent out the wordless, soundless signal that only cats can understand that something was outside on the porch that needed to be stared at.
It’s a chipmunk! Those sleek little critters with their racing stripes and remote-control antenna tails straight up in the air when they run inhabit my yard and have tortured generations of cats with their darting about in plain sight.
Mimi thinks to herself, I raised all my babies on chipmunks except these four. Maybe they’ll have to have a little taste…if I could only get out there…
Meanwhile, the chipmunk is stuffing his cheeks with fallen maple tree seed clusters, totally unconcerned about what is happening around him, and probably enjoying the fact that three cats are staring at him but can’t get to him.
And while our spring last year was a little accelerated, just to give you an idea of how far our season is behind this spring the maple tree buds are just beginning to open, nowhere near the time they drop their immature whirlybirds for the chipmunks!
