Someones’ Birthday is Coming Soon

laminated placemat with five black cats at birthday party
The Birthday Party placemat

July 26 is the big day! We do celebrate in some silly way each year, and in 2012 when they all turned five we had a special breakfast with hats! The hats were too big to stay on their heads so I just set them by their dishes. It all looks festive, and Mimi, of course, the main mom cat, is a total princess. It was so much fun, I decided to look into make a placemat out of it.

I had worked out several ideas for placemats and, discouraged at the price of the prints on the absorbent materials and various digital fabrics, I decided to go back to the good old laminated placemat for now. They are 11.5″ x 17.5″, printed double-sided on 120# card stock then laminated with heat-sealed 5 mil laminate trimmed 1/4″ larger than the print with rounded corners. They can be dunked in dishwater or wiped down with just about anything to clean and even sanitized with bleach or hydrogen peroxide, just avoid any abrasives to avoid scratching the laminate. Other than that, my household tests have found them to be just about indestructible, even for plastic chewers. Use as a mat under your cat’s food bowl, water bowl, your own food bowl, or just for decoration on a table or counter.

The neat thing about these is that I can make them two-sided, so these placemats feature two photos, one on each side. “The Birthday Party” features their birthday breakfast on the front and  “Five Black Cats in a Line” in color on the back.

In addition to “The Birthday Party” placemats I also “Five Black Cats in a Line” which features that photo on the front and the back, in color and black and white.

I know the photo is blurry but people continue to enjoy it and they’re so darned cute. It also kind of reminds me of the old photos I often see from before we had digital cameras—a little blurry, a little oversaturated, a little skewed. It’s the Fantastic Four and then Mimi: Bean, Sunshine, Mewsette, Giuseppe and Mimi, all thinking they are going to get something while I am at the sink. Well, I did wave some treats, that might have gotten their attention.

And because the photo above was looking particularly vintage, I thought I’d give it another vintage treatment, black and white with a halftone pattern.
