Preparing For a Hurricane or Other Disaster

You might remember that I traveled to Savannah GA in January to deliver a certain pair of kittens to their adoptive home with my niece and her children. Hurricane Matthew is threatening the eastern coast, and Savannah will definitely be affected by Matthew as the storm travels, but on Thursday a mandatory evacuation was ordered by Georgia’s governor for the counties along the coast, including Chatham County where they live. Other hurricanes have passed through, but generally because the geography of the coastline has the storm pretty far from the coast at that point the effect is minimal, usually just a level 1 or 2.
This time is a little different since Matthew may just roll right along the coastline. Schools were closed on Wednesday for the rest of the week so that emergency shelters could be prepared and school buses were used to start evacuating.
“Hurricanes are more fun when you’re 22,” my niece posted on Facebook so that she and her future husband bought a bunch of beer and wine and 20 lbs. of pasta and played board games through a level 3 hurricane. This week she and her three teenage children washed clothes, packed valuables, gassed up the vehicles and packed goods for the Elsa, Baby, Simon and Theo and Bingo the dog. They’ll decide first thing Friday morning when the storm enters the area and it’s more clear what the storm level will be before they decide whether or not to evacuate. I’ve been following Matthew hoping they don’t have to go, but if they do I know my niece is the most organized person on the face of the earth and they will all be as safe as she can make them.
Preparing for a hurricane or other weather disaster

The Atlantic hurricane season begins May 1 and extends through November each year. It’s a good idea to have some provisions on hand for emergencies at all times, and here is my article with more details on how to pack it up and go with pets, “Emergency Preparedness for You and Your Pets’.
The article includes links to other sites for information and a downloadable list of items to collect for your pet’s emergency kit.
