On St. Patrick’s Day Have a Drink With Family

My traditional St. Patrick’s Day greeting with a photo I took on March 17, 2010!
Especially if you’re the Parched Puddies having your daily drink in the mint green sink! It’s Giuseppe, Jelly Bean, Mr. Sunshine and Mewsette. They’re not Irish and neither am I, but when you’re getting together with family and drinking from the tap in the presence of something green on St. Patrick’s Day…well, we non-Irish have to improvise.
Here’s the original photo for this quartet at the sink, taken on March 17, 2010, one of the reasons it’s a classic for St. Patricks Day!

From the first post of this photo in 2010: All four do this every day—including this morning—in fact doing their best to lead me back upstairs after breakfast to turn the faucet on to a drip so they can drink. Just this morning the light was perfect* and all four were drinking at one time, plus you can actually see the faucet (a little) and tell it’s a sink. They’re pretty big and block a lot of the view.
*Photographing black cats in natural light is a trick, and many of the other photos I have of them drinking in the sink—or doing anything as a group, for that matter—often turns out as a black blob with eyes and ears if I’m not careful. It was often difficult to tell what was in the sink, let alone the number of cats.
But the sun was bright that day and reflected off the white walls in the bathroom and I finally captured one of my favorite moments with these four.
Some notes from 2026
When they fostered in the “old” bathroom in 2007, which would now be the “old old” bathroom, everything leaked. They grew up thinking that’s what all faucets did. When I had the bathroom renovated after a leak in 2009 I had it rearranged to what it is now, but they found the sink and tub in the new arrangement just fine and expected everything to drip. I don’t like encouraging cats to drink from the sink because I don’t want them to go without water unless I turn it on for them. But I saw each of them drink from all their water bowls so we were good. And I got great photos of them. That’s a win-win of there ever was one.
But catching this photo on St. Patrick’s Day? When the light was good? I still can’t believe it! And I still love them for it, they were just who they were and I followed them around with a camera.

That was an amazing photo. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Nearly 20 years later I’m still surprised, not that they got together on the sink, but that it was St. Patrick’s Day and the light was just right!
