October Featured Artwork and Desktop Calendar: The Magic Carpet

inkand watercolor sketch of two cats
“The Magic Carpet”, ink and watercolor, 6″ x 9″ © Bernadette E. Kazmarski

October has certainly brought cold nights and even cool days, and what better for this month’s desktop calendar and featured artwork than two brother cats cuddling down on the fluffy red bath mat, lots of warm colors, red and yellow and brown, all reminiscent of the season? This sketch has always caught my eye while scrolling through daily sketches, and when “StumbleUpon” was a big deal this sketch seemed to be shared by everyone, which made me very happy.

Giuseppe gives Mr. Sunshine a brotherly bath in a warm and cozy bathroom.

I loved the way they looked on that red rug and visualized a simple line sketch with the brush pen, but with color added. Although the bathroom is white and mint green I still pictured a warm yellow gold background around the red carpet, and keeping with the warm earth tones, the boys in brown. I wanted pretty nearly flat colors, just a little bit of intentional shading and variation, influenced, I think, by some art I’d been recently browsing, traditional, ancient art using natural colors, and modern homage to this style. This is pretty much what I visualized.

N.B.: Scanning and presenting digital art being what it is, I had to manipulate the red so much that I lost a few of the gentler details of texture and shading. It scanned as a bright, lighter, warm red, which was nice and initially I let it be, but decided it was the darker, cooler red that made the boys stand out more against the color. I wanted it to be really representative of the color I mixed and layered which as a deep but bright red, a little on the purple side. With rested eyes this morning and daylight, I tweaked the red a little more, and now on most screens it should resemble the original a little more closely.

Mr. Sunshine says, “You used that yellow because it matches my eyes.” Okay, Sunshine, maybe I did choose that sunshiny yellow because it’s darned close to the color of your eyes. But we didn’t notice that until this morning.

Mr. Sunshine appraises my painting.

I like this style, the black outlines, the yellow background, lots of red, so much I’ve used it a couple of other times since this sketch, as in “The Zen of Basket, After Toulouse-Lautrec”, and even Listening to Granados, de Falla and Rodrigo“.

This month’s desktop calendar

I’ve worked this image into a desktop calendar for you to enjoy and use for the entire month. Looking at the downloads from previous months and averaging out which dimensions fit which devices, I have reduced the number of variations from 12 to three. It was very time-consuming to create all the variations with new devices arriving all the time, so I have one for horizontal monitors/screens, one for square monitors/screens, and one that should fit the dimensions of nearly all mobile devices.

If these sizes don’t work for your device, or if you have problems, please let me know. Often I can troubleshoot the reason an image won’t download or won’t load on your device, but if I just can’t figure it out I can just email it to you and hope that works.

How to download and use your desktop calendar

  1. Click on one of the images below that matches the dimensions of your monitor to open the image in a new page.
  2. For desktop computers and laptops, right-click on that image and on a desktop computer choose “save as desktop wallpaper” or “save as background” or whichever option your operating system gives you to be able to do this. You may also simply save it to your hard drive and set it as your background from there.
  3. For mobile devices, download the image to your gallery then choose it as your wallpaper—this is slightly different on all devices.
