November Featured Artwork and Desktop Calendar: “Cat With Fruit”

My November desktop calendars always feature warm colors, earth tones, and the idea of giving thanks, feeling safe, warm, comfortable, well fed, with family or loved ones. I also try to vary them from one month to the next in style and medium.
That narrows the field down pretty far in what I have on hand, but “Cat With Fruit” from January 2014 is purr-fect for the season. The white-cold winter is outside the window, but Jelly Bean is comfortable and safe inside where even the shadows are warm and with summery tints in his fur. My fruit bowls with apples and Clementines add that traditional holiday sense of harvest plenty and even the richness of exotic fruit—did your family include oranges in their Thanksgiving spread of fresh fruits and nuts in the shell, or oranges in your Christmas stocking? My Depression-era parents with immigrant parents of their own never forgot how special the nuts and oranges really were, and seeing them always reminds me of those days and those lives. In addition, in this house we don’t forget that many cats are not so lucky to be on the inside, warm and safe, looking out at an icy day. Along with the simple inspiration I know that was on my mind when I painted it. So we give thanks.
Here’s what I had to say when I originally posted this in January 2014:
This is what is known as a “paintbomb”, kind of like a “photobomb”. Mimi did this to me last week but I did not paint her. When Jelly Bean decided to join the still life I was sketching, I decided to stop the other painting and sketch Bean. I was using oil pastels, so oil pastels it was. The paper was a little small for all the detail that’s in it, but that makes me keep it pretty simple, and all the tiny details I’d been visualizing just didn’t work. Too bad for me. Lots of color in an overcast winter day, and lots of color in a black cat, and that’s what counts.
I’m so pleased this little sketch is popular. I liked it as soon as I finished it, and I’ve reproduced it as a digital print, giclee, canvas and mousepad, and will be making other things as well. Read more below.
