Marketplace: “Big Nap” Decorative Dishes in Three Styles

Big Nap Decorative Dishes

“Big Nap” decorative dishes, based on one of my brush pen sketches, each one handmade, hand painted and unique, and reflect my influences from Japanese brush pen art, Theophile Steinlen, and Andy Warhol.

Jelly Bean’s roundness is a little exaggerated but it really was a big nap. Another one of the feline shapes I love.

“Big Nap” decorative dishes are based on one of my brush pen sketches which I enlarged and use to cut the clay around the outline of the sketch for each dish, soften the edges, then place it inside a bowl to give it a little lift around the edges.

I initially designed them in white clay with black brush pen detailing, the same pen I used for the sketch. But then I could also see them in colors and chose combinations reflecting my influences from Japanese brush pen art, above, Andy Warhol, below…

…and Theophile Steinlen. The red and black with gold is an homage to Theophile Steinlen’s style when illustrating black cats with an accent color. He has been an inspiration since before I can remember, and while the black and white design was what inspired this particular dish, this design was the color version I envisioned before I knew I even wanted a color version.

Dishes are about 6.5″ wide x 5″ high, and about 1/2″ deep. Each dish is handmade, handpainted and unique.

The round shape of “The Big Nap” fit well to the idea of a slightly larger polymer clay dish. I didn’t really want to cut around all Bean’s legs so I added a little to the shape to fill in around his legs. Because the clay is baked and it works best if the object is held to the final shape while baking the size ended up being determined by the one dish I could use to form the gentle curve I wanted that could also be baked in the oven along with the clay. After it’s baked, I use the same brush pen to draw the sketch onto the clay that I used for the original sketch on the white Japanese-style and the Warhol-style, then I use gold paint and a brush for the Steinlen-style.

Purchase a dish or two

Find them all in my Trinket and Decorative Dishes gallery on Portraits of Animals.

Because they are handmade and shaping, stamping and drying changes their dimensions, they are not uniform in size, shape or thickness, but that makes each one unique.

NOTES ON USE:

  • These are not safe for use with food.
  • These cannot be used as a hot pad for items taken out of the oven or microwave or off the stove, any item which has been heated by cooking—the polymer will soften from the heat.
  • These work great as a coaster for items filled with hot food or liquids, like mugs of coffee or tea or dishes filled with cooked food. There is not enough heat transferred to affect the polymer.
