Little Miracles
We had a toasty and good-smelling kitchen this Saturday, and Smokie decided to just be one of the gang and settle in with the cuddle on the cabinet. His bold curiosity, his courtesy to the ninjas, and confidence in piling down with Giuseppe and Mimi as I cooked and cleaned the kitchen had me spellbound, remembering where he came from. The day was kind of a graduation for him, and he’s really come farther than I could have imagined he would.
I opened the door to let them out in the late morning when the elders had had breakfast and naps and litterbox visits and done all their necessary activities that kittens should not disturb. I knew I’d be in the kitchen for several hours with making a pot of soup and baking bread along with generally cleaning up, and all the cats generally end up there because I’m there and it’s nice and warm. And there might be goodies, like snorting bread flour, but that’s another story, and not one for kittens to learn.
I ended up being supervised by Mimi, who loves it when I’m in the kitchen, and Giuseppe and Bean, who are always afraid they’ll miss something. Smokie and Bella made their way down, finally brave enough to step into the kitchen, but when Dr. Michelle and her husband Steve stopped by to pick up something and visit the two disappeared back upstairs. But Smokie came back down in a few minutes, the first time he’s spent time with someone other than me outside of his room. Up to now everyone has been fine who came into his room to visit, but even I can seem frightening when he’s not in his safe place. But after his initial fear he played with Steve, crossing over a major hurdle. He even came into the kitchen, though Bean had Michelle pretty well occupied with a deep belly rub. Bella came down the stairs for just a moment and went back up to pose for a lovely photo on the unmade bed, but the fact she came down the stairs was in itself a wonder.
Then Smokie joined Giuseppe and Mimi in the process of taking over my cabinet work surface to have a really good nap and still be able to see everything when they woke up, and Smokie came to join them when he finished exploring. They all like Smokie but don’t all interact with him to the same extent, but the big ninja likes him a lot and he’s not shy about letting anyone know. Mimi likes him better now that he’s not a little kitten. So he sat with them and mimicked what they did.
And then settled down and watched me so Mimi could nap. The warm cozy kitchen was getting to him.
And then all three just collapsed into a puddle of black fur and slept for about an hour.
When they woke up Giuseppe gave Smokie a good face wash.
And Bella joined us! She was actually on the cabinet and table with us but I didn’t get good photos since she was a little nervous and skittered around, but when she discovered the heat source she decided to enjoy the stove in her own special way. I’m so glad this is an older stove and made like a tank with a big kick plate that has kept may a kitty from possibly being burned by hot metal.
It was a great afternoon for both of them. Today I left the house for a short time while they were out and when I came back in the door Smokie ran at first but stopped and sniffed my hand, and then we were okay. Bella is still a little uncertain, but she is more confident each time she is out.
It really is a miracle for two kitties who would never have had a chance. Smokie is pretty ready to find his forever home, Bella still needs a little work.

Wonderful news!
I will be a bit sad but very very happy when Smokey follows a life of his own at a forever home. Lovely the little one.
Your big ninja is a nice guy, really nice.
Maru, I think Smokie will be a happy, confident kitty. And Giuseppe will need another trainee, or another older buddy.
Cuddle puddle…so adorable. Thanks so much for joining the blog hop. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
KittiesBlue, I loved that term from the first time I heard it, especially when I always say black cats look like you poured black paint on the floor!
