From the Archive: A Saturday Morning in April, 2005

two cats on deck.
A Saturday Morning in 2005.

It’s not the best photo, but the best my little 2MP digital with no zoom could do, but it was important to capture my two most senior cats in 2005, Stanley at something like 23 or 24 and Moses at 18 or 19, still sleeping on the deck, even though the morning sun had left. I applied a dry brush filter to clean it up a bit.

They demanded to go outside, but had to wait for me. Moses would have none of hearing she had to stay inside and would stolidly sit at the door with her chin tucked into her chest and her tail lashing now and then swiping the floor in one direction or another; a formerly feral cat she was never, ever mean but she was as stubborn as a rock and this was as close as she got to getting mad. Stanley often wouldn’t eat until he’d had a chance to tour the backyard to download his pee-mail and upload a reply. It was just the daily routine with these two in those days. Moses lived until February 2006, and Stanley until January 2007. Cookie was a baby at a mere 15 years old. I was down to only 7 cats and had no fosters until June that year, when Peaches and Cream joined our household.

Not to miss out on another feature of this photo, but if you look at the storm door near the bottom right of the glass you’ll see Cookie, who in those days had to wait for these two to come in before she could got out. No way I could keep an eye on three cats, even though they were unlikely to go anywhere—I wouldn’t take that chance.

I’ve been matching up some of these with film shots of the same scenes but haven’t found this yet, so here is the unfiltered version.
