Friday Four or More: On the Desk, on the Cabinet, on the Bed

five cats on desk
Monday Morning Desk

From May 2, 2016, Mewsette, Giuseppe, Mimi, Jelly Bean and Mr. Sunshine. I sit down to work on a Monday morning, and so do they. Or rather, they lie down, except for Mimi, likely still wanting to spend some time in the back yard.

I loved settling down like this though it made work a little difficult sometimes if I had papers I needed to lie out on my desk to work on an article or design job. Sometimes I could shift them a bit so I had a little more space, but often I ended up with papers off to the side or on my lap. Pretty much no matter what I did, they settled in with me. They didn’t stay all day because cats have a lot of things to do, one of them being a long afternoon nap on the bed upstairs. But no matter, this habit of theirs created such a bond and a connection with my work that I will always remember.

Just after this, as we were frequently fostering, fosters would join us and sometimes it was them plus more, and sometimes one of them would settle near us and we’d have a foster in the group. This was about when I started keeping a couple of boxes and then the baskets in front of the big north casement window that are still there today.

Shhh….kitties are sleeping.

A little later.

I found the first photo ready to go but not used in any post at all here and I couldn’t figure out why. Then I looked up the date—May 2, 2016 was the date the Homeless Cat Management Team became involved in our first big hoarding case. I remember seeing messages in our group and that they needed carriers so I took some to where they were, then stayed to document the actions and each of the cats. You can read about the Brookline hoarding case here. I had seen others in the decades before that, but nothing really chills your soul like seeing cats end up in situations like this.

About Friday Four or More

Thinking of Flashback Friday, going into the weekend, “Friday Four or More” features photos of Mr. Sunshine, Mewsette, Giuseppe and Jelly Bean from around the date of the post that I haven’t used in the past or are still really amusing. Alliteration makes a great headline, and here we are.

So you might guess by “Friday Four” in the title this is another category for my daily photos. I was in advertising for 40 years and writing catchy headlines is a skill I’ve always had close at hand. Seeing these four—and more—together, and also twos and threes, in unused photos through the years I thought I’d just put those photos to use with on a regularly-scheduled day of the week. As I’ve been putting posts together Friday has been a day without a theme but because I loosely feature individual cats a good bit of the time on other weekdays I’d been saving group photos for Friday and sometimes Wednesday. I had posted From the Archives, unused photos from past years, on Saturday and Vintage Photos, taken on film, on Sunday, for years, but stopped last year for photos of the Four whenever I needed to. I want to resume those because I still have plenty of photos of my feline family through the years back to the 80s.

All this scheduling just helps me be more efficient. When I started posting until about five years ago my daily photos were really from that day. Then with increased vendor shows and big chunks of time taken up I decided to start posting certain themes on set days of the week.

I posted two weeks ago and missed last week because I found I had more than one to share, but couldn’t decide so I let it go. This weekend (I know it’s Sunday-Monday, just catching up) I decided to use a group of five or six from around this date. We are coming up on an anniversary, losing Mewsette on June 12, so bear with me as I share photos of the four together on Fridays for…a while.

And Then I Gave Up Work for the Day, 2009

And then I gave up work for the day…

The above photo is from 2009, but I like to call it back up each year. Some things never change.

So I said in 2012 when I reposted this photo of Jelly Bean, Mewsette, Giuseppe (underneath Mewsette) and Mr. Sunshine sleeping piled up on my desk, in all practicality ending my work day for lack of space for me. Not for real, though, or I never would have gotten any work done! At some point in the day they all piled up there and I just loved having them there and managed to work around them (and they also piled up on the bed each day, and sometimes somewhere on the floor or in the kitchen and even in the basement). They were two years old here! So many more years to love and enjoy them. I have more details about this particular photo just below under “2009,” then just to prove the point a photo of the four of them from 2012 in slightly different positions, but same idea.

When I had a different template for The Creative Cat this was my footer. But it was also kind of a show-stopping photo as I remember it got plenty of comments, and I think that might have been on Facebook.

2009: They are always doing something unique, that whimsical quartet of siblings, but sometimes they have the right idea. I really was tired, my eyes were strained, I was losing focus at the end of a long day, and one by one the three boys piled up trying to get their point across (we need dinner, you need to stop working), hence the multiple nap. First Giuseppe settled front and center and draped his paws on my keyboard, then curled up on the Jelly Bean on the left and Mr. Sunshine on the right. Then Mewsette, the big sister, piled on top of all of them and began bathing them all in turn, causing things to start falling off my desk. Still, I could pile papers on top of them and keep working. When more paws and tails expanded onto my keyboard, I decided to take their advice and quit working for the day.

2011: Okay, okay, I admit I’ve been busy, but do you guys like to eat?! Then you’ll keep doing things like this as inspiration.

2012: For now, enjoy somewhat over 50 pounds of black cat on one desk (they’ve lost some weight).

Below is a version from (this day in) 2012 and the only difference is that Mimi is part of the group on the far left so it isn’t quite 50 pounds of black cat, and the other three are Giuseppe, Mewsette and Mr. Sunshine, just continuing yesterday’s heat-induced laziness.

Maybe she’ll notice us now.

It’s About Time You Came Home, May 8, 2014

five black cats on desk
It’s about time you got home.

Well, yes, I do leave the house now and then. If this is the greeting I get when I come back, I’m not sure I want to come in the door—I’m either glared at or ignored.  But as soon as I sit down in my chair they are all over me. I think they expect me to leave again and they are actually a little confused. I was working at this desk early, then got up to run to the bank for a deposit when they opened and came right back, and was gone for all of 20 minutes. This is not what we usually do in the morning. Now life can get back to normal.

(Aren’t they gorgeous? Mr. Sunshine, Jelly Bean, Mewsette, Mr. Sunshine. This was a Wordless Wednesday so there was no text with it, but it’s one of the photos that makes my heart skip a beat.)

And there are a LOT more fun photos from the years past on this date. I think we all kind of came to life as spring moved in on us.

Focusing on a Good Nap, 2021

black cat napping
Complete focus.

Mr. Sunshine will not be distracted from his complete focus on a really good nap in the sun on the landing. I pestered him to open his eyes, lift his head, give me a profile, I even ruffled his fur as you can see by the extra furs all over him, but he would not be moved. If you scroll down to the featured photo at the end of this post, you’ll see Mr. Sunshine prefers a more artful aesthetic in his portrayal.

Mimi says, “Look how pretty my yard is.” We remember the days when she hunted chipmunks and mice in this yard to feed her babies. Now, she owns the place.

Waiting for Elevensies. We don’t actually serve Elevensies in this house.

Hamlet enjoys a leafy morning.

It’s a treat party with all 8 #blackcats! Auntie Denise stopped by with a big bag of Kitty Kaviar salmon treats, which we haven’t had here for years, and apparently they were very much missed. It’s kind of a skewed view, but three are on the cabinet, three are on the floor, Mimi is over by the fountain, and Basil is on the stool by the sink still trying to figure things out. Mariposa and Sienna are still a little shy, though sometimes they come out when Denise is here because they see her more often. They came to the kitchen after Denise left. Basil and Mariposa couldn’t figure out how the treats worked. You can smell them, you can see them, but when you chew on them, there’s nothing there.

Hamlet is giving this #greetercat thing a try. He had a good bath, and the view was nice, but found it was not as cozy as his box under the table. Sienna’s human punked out during our open house and didn’t get a chance to share her pretty #tortie face, but she was happy to be the #greetercat for the last day of my #openhouse.

Brotherly Bath, and a Video, 2020

A screenshot from the video.

Brother cats Giuseppe and Jelly Bean co-grooming, then they realize they are not only being watched, they are being videoed. Watch below!

I don’t know where this week went! This video is from Wednesday. I ran out of time for the things I needed to do that day because of unexpected other things, so of course I took a little video of the boys grooming each other, then added some music by a friend. It was a great way to practice taking video with my new camera, and I like it very much. I can focus the videos on a subject and the background softens, I don’t get awkward foreshortening if I get too close, and the lighting is as good as my camera itself can produce. I’m looking forward to many more. You have to see Mariposa in action, and Sienna and Hamlet too! And everyone else!

Kind of how I felt this morning. We’re still feeling somewhat scattered. But the weather is nice. Mimi and the kids, and Sienna.

Can I Sleep Now? 2019

Mewsette is ready to nap.
Mewsette is ready to nap.

Mewsette is ready to nap, but I’m right there with that big black thing, looking at her. How is a kitty supposed to sleep under those conditions? She’s all ready, she just needs for me to take the photo and go. So I did.

Well, who could resist such purrfection? Basil has such purrfect posture too. I took a long series of photos of him in this spot and it seems as if he’s learned to hold a pose.

It’s s great day when you’re a formerly feral housepanther and you’ve got your pink bizzy ball trapped in the tub.

Look at that tail! Hamlet is spectacular.

Exciting New Grocery Boxes, 2017

Maximum capacity.

Maximum capacity of this box is one Jelly Bean and one Mr. Sunshine less Sunshine’s tail which apparently doesn’t fit.

Below, Basil has his very own grocery box. I can see I should get bigger boxes.

Glad to be home and off my feet for a while.

You may see a few extra photo posts for a few days. I’ve been getting so behind in posting the ones from Instagram. My plan is to share them here when I share them on IG so you get to see them somewhere near the day I took them.

This will all even out eventually! Shows and studio time make it difficult but we are adjusting.
