Featured Daily Sketch: Winter Morning, 2013

From 2013: Mimi looks out this window nearly every day so I should have plenty of chances to sketch her, but I rarely have my art materials or my ability to focus first thing. I decided today was the day, though it was bright overcast, without the clear hard shadows of a brilliant winter morning. Still, the softened shadows were filled with dusky colors while even Mimi’s mahogany was nearly red.
This is just a bit of a thing in soft pastels on pastel paper in the little 5″x 7″ pads I keep at a couple of desks–and keep forgetting I have on hand. I used a buff underneath this, to make sure I kept it warm. It reminds me a bit of another sketch from earlier that year, “The Sunny Upstairs Window”.
I don’t think Mimi likes it, though; she keeps walking back and forth in front of my monitor, and I get the idea she’s hoping I don’t post it.
I like to show the edges of a sketch like this, but they take on a slightly different character when they’ve been cropped to the essential image, as below.

Daily Sketches 2011 to 2015
I think I accomplished what I'd set out to do three years ago today, a challenge to me and entertainment and enjoyment for you: to create a quick sketch of my cats each day as a way to practice and experiment, and present the sketch on that day with no editing, no waiting, no excuses, just to do the sketch and share it.

This is a lovely one!
Thank you–I thought I was a little off the mark at first but this one really grew on me.
Those are both super cool sketches!
Thanks! I loved sketching my girls in life, and I love remembering them by what they inspired.
