Featured Daily Sketch: Two in a Basket, November 4, 2012

Too cute for words, and the longer it goes on the worse it gets. I had to sketch them, Mewsette and Mr. Sunshine.
2025: Sometimes it was difficult to tell what body parts belonged to which head and even how many cats were in the basket. All black and they’d stuff themselves into any size container to be together, sometimes beginning with only one cat, then another and another as they found each other for the big cat pile nap of the day. Here Mewsette is keeping watch as Mr. Sunshine sleeps, and it’s pretty clear which parts all went together with which cat.
When I sketched them I liked to use some technique to distinguish between/among them. I found this blue and brown theme naturally from visual cues because each of them had at least a small amount of brown in them when in sun or warm room light, and highlights that typically were bluish because the light from a window was often not sunlight but cool north light or reflected light from the sky. I used that combination in a pastel mode in a more abstract sketch in August 2012 with “Love Cats” but this appears to be the first full-color use of it and there are several others in various places and combinations.

“Love Cats” is once again Mewsette and Mr. Sunshine. They were so close, and I love to rediscover these little moments unexpectedly.
Where to find “Two Cats in a Basket” or “Love Cats”
Years ago “Love Cats” was one of the first designs I used on a round keepsake box and it was very popular.

These round mache boxes aren’t as available as they were but I recently found at least one in the size below if not a nested set as I’ve been organizing all my art and craft materials.
The original art for both sketches is available as well as prints. I don’t have them listed on my website but you can contact me about the original or prints. I think it’s also likely one or both will be A2 note cards this time around when I print note cards.
Daily Sketches 2011 to 2015
I think I accomplished what I'd set out to do three years ago today, a challenge to me and entertainment and enjoyment for you: to create a quick sketch of my cats each day as a way to practice and experiment, and present the sketch on that day with no editing, no waiting, no excuses, just to do the sketch and share it.
