From 2013: Giuseppe proudly displays how he’s arranged the rug to his liking. He was pretty comfortable there in the sun on his warm rug, so a sketch catching him looking up at me was a possibility, but I still had to finish with a black outline—the red earth pastel pencil just wasn’t clear enough.

My scanner has been sick and needs repaired. When I complete my sketches, I scan them on my Epson all-in-one into Photoshop instead of photographing them. It’s much more accurate and no need for an extra step of downloading, but when the light starts to “go” in one of these things it’s done for. The most damaged areas are right down the center of the scanner bed. You’ll see a few lighter stripes in the left area of this sketch if you look closely. I guess I’ll have to do really tall narrow sketches or scan them in two parts until I figure out what to do with this thing.

IN 2026: For some reason I just love this whimsical little sketch, in part because it is whimsical. Just nice and curvy, loopy front paws and twirly tail, and Giuseppe’s big eyes. All that wild sketchy stuff to fill in the dark areas just add to it. I haven’t shared this sketch since 2014  but even without looking it up I knew this was Giuseppe. I waited, and he looked up at me.

And the solution to the scanner was to buy a new all-in-one, this time an oversized Epson Workforce, the first of three over the next several years. Now replaced with an Epson Ecotank.

I think it will make a darling little note card, adding some layers and dimension under it.

Daily Sketches 2011 to 2015

I think I accomplished what I'd set out to do three years ago today, a challenge to me and entertainment and enjoyment for you: to create a quick sketch of my cats each day as a way to practice and experiment, and present the sketch on that day with no editing, no waiting, no excuses, just to do the sketch and share it.
