Featured Daily Sketch: Stained Glass Cats, 5/6/2014

From 2014: Here’s an idea that’s been occurring to me lately as I watch the cats in the sun by the dining room window. I love the way the glass in a stained glass panel is shaded light toward the center of its shape, darker outside by the shadow from the lead between the shapes, and even the rippled quality of the color in many pieces of glass. I’d considered oil pastel for this but they weren’t handy when Jelly Bean (blue), Mewsette (red) and Giuseppe (green) gathered in the late afternoon sun in the dining room window around the small hurricane lamp. The fruit bowl with red and white onions on the table, the geranium leaves were aglow with the light through the window, shadows were deep and colorful, and each cat is its unique color, bits of sky through the green leaves of the river birch outside. I followed the simplified shapes and colors I saw through squinted eyes to create the glass shapes.
I’ll definitely work on refining this, at least as long as the sun shines in the window like this. Below is the uncropped version of the sketch.

From 2026: This sketch worked out exactly as I had envisioned and I was so excited! Though I never did another sketch like this one, I did use it in gift items…
…and it inspired a portrait. Click here to see “Stained Glass Feline Family”.

Daily Sketches 2011 to 2015
I think I accomplished what I'd set out to do three years ago today, a challenge to me and entertainment and enjoyment for you: to create a quick sketch of my cats each day as a way to practice and experiment, and present the sketch on that day with no editing, no waiting, no excuses, just to do the sketch and share it.

The smaller votive on the left is part of my non-custom Pet Memorial Gift collection though it’s pretty as simply an everyday votive.
The larger jar lamp with LED string lights is a big favorite in that collection with the art repeated around the jar and the trim areas painted in rich cobalt blue.
