Featured Daily Sketch: Sleeping, January 12, 2012

From 2012: Mewsette curls up for a nap under the kitty keep-warm lights at the desk in my office downstairs.
No more full coverage with the charcoal, just good, heavy lines with lots of variation in shape and opacity to help describe both Mewsette’s outline and dimensional shape.
My cats and I are creatures of habit, but of evolving habits. For days my cats had been crowding under the kitty keep-warm lamps but have been slowly losing interest and only Mewsette remains to act as feline paperweight on my desk. At the same time I have been exploring my piece of vine charcoal with their outlines and shapes, fur and eyes and paws, working with different techniques every day; their shapes and the density of the shadows under the high-intensity lamps inspired this exploration. We work together on these things, but I am feeling we are all ready to move on to new media, and they to a new heat source.
From 2026: I’ve been looking for a way to use all the charcoal sketches on gift items. I see some of them, like this one, as little dimensional things, like impressed into or raised up from the surface of a tile or even embossed in paper. I’m pretty sure I’m going to do note cards, so time will tell.
Daily Sketches 2011 to 2015
I think I accomplished what I'd set out to do three years ago today, a challenge to me and entertainment and enjoyment for you: to create a quick sketch of my cats each day as a way to practice and experiment, and present the sketch on that day with no editing, no waiting, no excuses, just to do the sketch and share it.

The original sketch, “Winter Morning,” is available but not listed. If you are interested, please ask!
If not, below is a sketch in a similar style that is available as a print.

I like the times when they are going about their business without me involved. Jelly Bean is curled, sleeping, at the top of the steps where the sun had been shining, briefly awakened by Mewsette as she climbs the steps and rounds the corner into my bedroom.

Your sketches are divine ~ hugs,
an artist reflects
Thank you, from one artist to another! This simple sketch is very popular likely because it’s something we all smile at, our kitty curled up napping, relaxed and feeling safe.
This is beautiful, as are they all.
Thanks so much! I try to capture that moment we all love about our kitties.
I love your sketches.
Thanks, Ellen! I try to share one every day.
