Featured Daily Sketch: Quickly, Before They Wake, 2013

From 2012: Giuseppe and Mewsette spent the day on my desk and I watched as they cuddled, stretched and blocked my view. I’ve already sketched those postures, they are moving too much, I’m in the middle of something…
But when they tucked their heads in together like two commas cuddling, I furtively grabbed my sketchbook and a pencil and quietly but quickly stood up to do a quick sketch of their two faces tucked together; sometimes my movements or even looking at them wakens them, especially as the afternoon draws along and they are thinking of dinner. I did manage to snap a photo as well, but they sensed my vigilance and woke up to look around, shift, and the moment was over.
From 2026: A quick simple pencil sketch like this carries more of a memory for me than any photo, and in some ways I think they carry more of the sense of the moment with just enough detail to convey what identified and distinguished the two—the outlines of their faces, I can tell the kitty on the bottom is Mewsette because of the shapes of her forehead, nose, cheekbone, and Giuseppe is the other because of his forehead and ears—and the little sketchy lines around them that vaguely shows they are curled into each other.
Daily Sketches 2011 to 2015
I think I accomplished what I'd set out to do three years ago today, a challenge to me and entertainment and enjoyment for you: to create a quick sketch of my cats each day as a way to practice and experiment, and present the sketch on that day with no editing, no waiting, no excuses, just to do the sketch and share it.
