Featured Daily Sketch: Mewsette Sketchpage, 2014

From 2014: I did one main sketch of Mewsette washing her toes, but decided I didn’t like it enough to stand alone so I did a few more little ones on the same page.

I spent several hours framing things at my work table, and after the initial setup with Mewsette, Giuseppe and Bean joined us. Ultimately I lured them away so that I could get my project done and not be up all night, but Mewsette returned to check on me every half hour or so, which was very kind of her while others slept to disturb her own nap to stop by and brighten my evening with purrs and lots of loose furs. She had a bath and washed her toes, and sat between the photos and mats on the table, then found deep meditation while observing a stinkbug on the shelf. All in all it was a good night.

From 2026: I have always loved to study other artists’ sketchbooks, like the book I have including pages from Theophile Steinlen’s sketchbook pages of cats. Looking past the subject and setting and focusing on the gesture or posture to capture the essence of the action points out details you may have missed, and excludes details that aren’t immediately important. You also get to sense a process rather than just a moment, and the moment is usually what I’m focusing on. I only did a few sketch pages, and this page of Mewsette assisting me through the night while I worked is one.

Daily Sketches 2011 to 2015

I think I accomplished what I'd set out to do three years ago today, a challenge to me and entertainment and enjoyment for you: to create a quick sketch of my cats each day as a way to practice and experiment, and present the sketch on that day with no editing, no waiting, no excuses, just to do the sketch and share it.
