From 2012: Don’t know how Mr. Sunshine ended up with pink all over him today, but he was the model for this! A little spring fun with the brush markers and his curvy silhouette, but I had to capture his exotic slanted eyes.

I was photographing crabapple blossoms this morning. Surely all that pale and bright pink left an impression for the day.

From 2013: I know, I just ran this at Easter, but this is the actual anniversary of the day I posted it, and I think a pink boy kitty deserves a day to himself, don’t you? Besides that, I have no sketch today, and my hands are tired, it is Friday, and I am going to give them a soak in a pile of warm purring kitties. I’m also trying to determine all the places I’d like to use Mr. Sunshine’s sketch too—tote bags? garden flags? He’s too colorful to let him pass unnoticed!

From 2026: In the following years I did determine several ways to use his likeness, and I’m just about to start a new one!

2013: Garden Flags

You can see him in this first run of my garden flags back in 2013 when a local printer could print them for me at an affordable cost. You can read about this momentous day, along with Mimi outdoors modeling with the flags, here.

2018: Signs of the Cat

Mr. Sunshine is “the potato chip cat” in this set! I found he was the purrfect sitting silhouette. Read my first post about the signs here.

Cats Are Like Potato Chips, It’s Hard to Have Just One

I remember having seen this quote on a refrigerator magnet in a friend’s house at least 25 years ago. It probably had some resonance with those who remember the Lay’s potato chip commercial. I’ve not seen it since and I have no idea who came up with it, but it’s totally true and it’s not copyrighted, so I decided I had to use it. It makes everyone laugh when I say it.

The cat silhouette design is adapted from one of my daily sketches, “Pink Sunshine”. Because I wanted the cat silhouettes to look like a repeating pattern I wanted them to be as identical as possible. In this case handpainting, because of the wood surface, didn’t give me the effect I wanted, I cut a stencil for the cat silhouettes and then add the whiskers.

2019: Sitting Pretty Refrigerator Magnets

That silhouette was still the purrfect sitting silhouette for this idea too! Read about them here (it’s on Portraits of Animals).

Daily Sketches 2011 to 2015

I think I accomplished what I'd set out to do three years ago today, a challenge to me and entertainment and enjoyment for you: to create a quick sketch of my cats each day as a way to practice and experiment, and present the sketch on that day with no editing, no waiting, no excuses, just to do the sketch and share it.
