Featured Daily Sketch: In Window Light, 2012

From 2012: Oil pastel again, for the strength of colors and the texture; it’s hot and feels like summer (even though it’s May 26). Here Mimi naps in the light from the window, slipping in under the mini blind. In the strength of the sun, all colors appear in her fur and on the old marble windowsill and the hot yellow sun outside the window.

I’ve been working out this style now following Two Cats After van Gogh. In fact, in my garden flags, this image backs Two Cats After van Gogh, and I just finished a few keepsake boxes bearing the image. Sweet Mimi, so inspiring!

So inspiring, it won the President’s Award along with Two Cats After van Gogh in the Cat Writers Association 2013 Communications Contest. Read about that here.

From 2026: I fully agree with me from back then, and I still love how this one turned out. Mimi is blue, but that’s what I saw in the dark shadows on the hot afternoon, but there’a a reflected glow of green from the old maple outside the window, then the warm sunshine, and Mimi’s typical resting pose, though not her sleeping pose. I painted this from above instead of from the side, which is how I would have seen her from my seat at the drafting table facing the window. I’m glad I did that because I really like the angle too.

Where to find In Window Light

In several places since it’s one of my favorite sketches! You can find prints on paper and canvas and greeting cards on the product post for prints.

As I work my way through setting up for upcoming events and stocking my website you’ll also see In Window Light on other favorite handmade gift items like keepsake boxes and tiles, and a small votive lamp as one of four of the “after van Gogh” designs.

Daily Sketches 2011 to 2015

I think I accomplished what I'd set out to do three years ago today, a challenge to me and entertainment and enjoyment for you: to create a quick sketch of my cats each day as a way to practice and experiment, and present the sketch on that day with no editing, no waiting, no excuses, just to do the sketch and share it.
