Featured Daily Sketch: Cup of Coffee, 2014

From 2014: Mewsette does her best to get to my coffee, but all she ever gets is to lick the sides. I think she learned this from Cookie, who really did drink my coffee when I wasn’t paying attention. I don’t see how they could like the taste of coffee, but I’m sure they like the half ‘n half.

She was on the edge of my worktable in the studio and the mug was a handthrown ceramic with a glossy brown glaze, but I decided to add a flash of red that I like so much with my black cats. Instead of the brown wood edge of my worktable I made the table edge red like the enamel table in the kitchen where she so often tried to drink out of my mug. And then for good measure I made the mug red too.

I’m working on a really cool project with this series of sketches from the kitchen, with black cats and those touches of red!

From 2026: That was back in 2014. By 2023 Mewsette was regularly stealing coffee from my mug at any opportunity! Nearly up to the day we lost her, so this sketch is even more precious than when I drew it.

AND…that “really cool project” turned into the hot plates/trivets and dishtowels! And in 2026, a few new things…

I think I accomplished what I'd set out to do three years ago today, a challenge to me and entertainment and enjoyment for you: to create a quick sketch of my cats each day as a way to practice and experiment, and present the sketch on that day with no editing, no waiting, no excuses, just to do the sketch and share it.
