Bella did it again this past snowy morning, even though the tree is now gone. Not only was it snowing but it was near zero first thing in the morning, and it reminded me of this sketch. I’m so glad she’s inside instead of living her life as a feral cat, and I’m sure Bella is happy about that too.
This sketch is from January 2015, inspired by Bella watching a snow flurry.
Here’s what I said about it in January 2015:
We had some snow this morning. Kittens have only seen snow in the air once before today, and are fascinated.
This is Bella on my bedroom windowsill first thing this morning, watching the air thick with flurries, and no doubt birds too, in the maple tree outside the bedroom window. It is also many other cats through the years as well as I’ve awakened and watched them utterly immersed in whatever was happening right outside the window. The little cat, the big window, it seems to be a theme.
The “kittens” referred to are Bella and Basil.
Then when I shared it again in January 2016:
Yesterday when I woke up and saw Bella fascinated by the early snow squall, this is what I saw, and I also remember that without someone to rescue her she’d be out there, she might be trying to feed herself and kittens like Mimi did, she might not even have survived, instead of sitting safe inside a big window in a warm house with her current career as an artist’s model. It’s not just what I see that’s inspiring, it’s what I know too.
Where to find this artwork
The original of “Snowy Morning” is sold, but I have plenty of print options with the image, and also offer it as a greeting card and a note card.
I also create gift items with this sketch, such as keepsake boxes and gift bags. You can find this art on Portraits of Animals.
This sketch also won both a CWA Certificate of Excellence and a Muse Medallion for illustration in the 2015 Cat Writers’ Associaion Communications Contest.
Bella is Purr-fect.
