Featured Artwork: Small Portraits Including Two Recent Portraits

watercolor portraits of cat and dog
5″ x 7″ watercolor portraits of Ginger and Fitz, two examples of small portraits I’ve painted recently.

I painted Ginger’s and Fitz’s portraits late last summer and early autumn. Both were commissioned by the same person and were gifts to friends.

About these small portraits

Long ago I quit offering portraits 8″ x 10″ and smaller because no one wanted portraits that small. Recently I’ve had a few requests for these sizes, and I actually enjoy working on small portraits so I’m glad to oblige—and now I have a standard price for 5″ x 7″, 6″ x 8″, and 8″ x 10″. Unlike larger and more complex portraits which I prefer to discuss and estimate, these smaller portraits are more predictable.

5″ x 7″ Portraits

These can fit in a 5″ x 7″ frame, or in an 8″ x 10″ frame that comes with a mat, which I like a little better because it gives the portrait a little more space around the outside.

Above are examples of 5″ x 7″ portraits to give you an idea of what we can accomplish in a portrait that size.

A basic 5″ x 7″ portrait is $50 and includes:

  • Subjects: One
  • Color: black and white media such as charcoal, pencil, ink, or color media such as pastel, watercolor, colored pencil, etc.
  • Background or objects: none but shading or colored paper

Available at additional cost:

  • Add background to portrait: $25.00
  • Mat and frame portrait: $25.00
  • Ship small portrait: $15.00 .

6″ x 8″ Portraits

This size is a little larger than the 5″ x 7″ but I sometimes prefer it for being able to show just a little more detail because of the slight increase in size, but it’s still small enough, framed, to fit on a wall or even on an easel in most homes.

These can fit in an 8″ x 10″ frame but you’d need a mat, which I can provide for an extra $25,

Above are examples of 6″ x 8″ portraits with a variety of backgrounds.

A basic 6″ x 8″ portrait is $75 and includes:

  • Subjects: One
  • Color: full color media such as pastel, watercolor, colored pencil, etc.
  • Background or objects: a color or colored paper or simple background, bed, blanket, toy, etc.

Available at additional cost:

  • Add additional subject: $25.00
  • Scenic or complicated background: $25.00
  • Mat and frame portrait: $25.00
  • Ship small portrait: $15.00

8″ x 10″ Portraits

A basic 8″ x 10″ portrait is $100 and includes:

  • Subjects: Up to three
  • Color: all media such as pencil, charcoal, ink, pastel, watercolor, colored pencil, etc.
  • Background or objects: a color or colored paper or simple background

Available at additional cost:

  • Add additional subject: $25.00
  • Scenic or complicated background: $25.00
  • Mat and frame portrait: $25.00
  • Ship small portrait: $15.00

I offer gift certificates for portraits in any denomination beginning at $50.00, which is the basic cost of a small monochromatic portrait.

The certificate itself is 8.5″ x 11″ and features a collage of portrait images with the recipient’s and giver’s names, printed on parchment cover stock. The whole thing is packaged in a pocket folder and includes a brochure, a letter from me to the recipient and several business cards. The certificate package can be easily mailed or wrapped as a gift and shipped directly to your recipient.

I can also make it downloadable if you’re in a hurry.

Certificates are good for up to one year after issue.

You can purchase gift certificates here or from Portraits of Animals if you are also purchasing other animal-inspired merchandise.

I prefer to look over the work and price the portrait according to how much work will go into it, as described above, but you can either set a budget or get started by purchasing a certificate for yourself or as a gift.
