Daily Sketch: Giuseppe Resting

So Giuseppe rests all the time, why draw him now? Jusdt because he looked so velvety black there on my desk, completely covering up something I needed to work on. You can see a few extra lines I’d erased at the bottom; he had started out with one paw curled under and his head up. I no sooner had that roughly outlined than he laid his head on his paw.

My desk lights are shining on him from behind so his face is in shadow, and I did my best to capture the subtleties of highlights and reflections on his features in several different hardnesses of regular charcoal plus white charcoal on tan toned paper, then I used the kneaded eraser to burnish the densest black areas.

And when I scanned it, putting the entire sketchbook in the scanner, I liked the way that looked too. I don’t think of just seeing the sketches as you do because I actually see them in my sketchbooks. So this is what it looks like.

What else was I sketching on this date?

Mimi peeked around the edge of the curtain as she was on neighborhood patrol this evening. Who could resist? I just wasn’t clear on exactly how she was sitting, but she’s still observing me.

Paws, 2012

Mimi and Jelly Bean were lazing about on the desk. Bean has to have at least one front paw stretched all the way out, Mimi just lets her paws relax and somehow they got all tangled together. They held still long enough for me to do a slightly more detailed sketch of the tangled paws, but it looked odd without their faces, so I lightly sketched them in.
