Daily Sketch: Cuddle for Two

Mr. Sunshine settled on my desk this afternoon and curled up right where I could reach out and touch him now and then. Eventually Bean joined us and had a nice bath right in front of me, walked all over my lap and keyboard purring for a while, then went to his brother for a cuddle, first a head butt, then a little mutual grooming, then settling in together. I love the wordless conversations, and when they settle together it’s wonderful to be near. As always, I took a photo of them, yet another photo of two cats cuddled together on my desk, but as they tucked themselves closer together I saw a wonderful shape develop, just a single, simple line that connected them both as they were connected in their cuddle.

Just for your reference so you can see approximately what I saw, the photo I took is below. I like the way they have their heads tucked together, but Bean had settled his face deeper into his hip by the time I got my pen to draw.

What else was I sketching on this date?

Kelly’s After-dinner Drink, 2012

Kelly has a nice long drink after dinner. She has always had some interesting little drinking games. She always drinks from the opposite side of the bowl and licks the water up against the side of the bowl before pulling her tongue back into her mouth. She also stands a little off to the side, often at an angle, and shuffles her feet between lapping.

In this case, of course, she moved before I was done sketching, and I wanted to fill in some of her black areas. I had her “model” by simply standing up with this side of her body facing me, which worked best when I held my pen in the air in front of her so she would face it and not me, except that I could not draw then. So I sort of moved Kelly into position, held my pen out in front of her, took a good look at her speckles, then drew a section. She was okay with this. Not so long ago she would have been highly suspicious and a little frightened by my activity. Kelly has come a long way.

Mimi was charming when totally engaged in this little bath on the kitchen floor in the morning sun. She comfortably reclined on the floor, randomly licking her toes and legs and looking out the door at the birds on the deck. Such a happy little moment, so simple.

Back to regular old colored pencil.
