That’s some pretty intense birdwatching! Sienna, Hamlet and Mariposa, the three youngest, are lined up in rapt attention at the sparrow at the feeder. We are in a region where songbirds were suffering from some type of infection, so our local Audobon Society asked birdfeeders to remove their feeders and even bird baths so that birds did not have a place to congregate long enough to see if that helped stem the infection. They gave us the word that we could resume a few weeks ago, but we went nearly all summer with no birdwatching, hence the intense interest now.
I love to see these three together for enrichment. They are so comfortable with each other and have such similar interests, though they seem like very different cats. All three rescues through TNR, two by me and Hamlet by another rescuer. What a nice trio.
Yes, we can have our birdbaths again too!
You know how Mimi likes to drink out of bird baths. What could possibly go wrong? Yes, it’s really leaning like that, it’s really just a plastic bird bath. And she did not jump up, she circled it, paused and crouched a few times…but she does this just about every day. Possibly I’ll straighten this thing out and put a chair next to it or something so she can get to it.
From the back yard and beyond
A circling swallow silhouetted against the fading sunset sky catches the eye, but three red-wing blackbirds in silhouette are singing in the tall hemlock. The meadow is a very noisy place at dusk, full of communication among birds and insects. What a beautiful moment in the heat of August.

Kelly enjoys the sun on her back on the bathroom windowsill, and also likely the reflected heat from the deck roof, just below. It’s not all that warm outside, but just warm enough to have the windows open in mid-afternoon. The pussy willow is right outside the window and the dappled leaves were charming, and the blue sky beyond. Read more and purchase.
