Daily Photo: Hamlet Keeping Cool, and a Video

black cat on windowsill
Hamlet is one cool cat.

During the excessively hot weather, Hamlet gave the marble windowsills a try. I gave capturing an everyday interior in black and white a try. I like that every once in a while, especially at a window where there are often many objects and things are in silhouette with dramatic lighting. Hamlet lends himself well to it because he often avoids eye contact, sometimes just to avoid it, but often because he’s constantly scanning the room for whatever. Except when he’s sleeping on his back. But that’s down below here. As for the marble windowsills, they are nice for a while, and worth the effort. They may seem fancy, but they are actually practical because the metal-framed casement windows tended to develop moisture on the inside during cold weather and would drip “sweat” onto the window frame and sill, which would quickly rot away from the moisture. In the days before plastics, there was marble. And no doubt many a fine feline enjoyed a marble windowsill in those days, and these.

Hamlet and things.

Bear with me on these videos lately! I’m trying out different techniques and still having fun. When I reached to pet Hamlet on the table by the window and he began rolling over onto his back, I decided I had to try to get a video of that belly. Isn’t he the sweetest? He still takes off when I look at him sometimes, and then he does this.

The Four Housecats of the Apocalypse were looking plushy and feeling spiffy after this morning’s brushing, but they would not sit still for a photo so I photoshop-filtered them. They do everything together all at once so I have to use a brush in both hands when we do this. They love it so much I could brush them all day. Alas, life is short.

“Don’t give me that ‘if you like to eat you’ll let me keep working’ line, I like to eat and I’d like to eat right now.” But Mr. Sunshine is nonetheless respecting my work area and not dropping black cat hairs into my white polymer clay, tucked into the rounds of the sweeper hose on top of a stack of cat beds with stacks of throw rugs, TNR materials, laundry, and my Costco pack of paper towels all around. He is happy to be featured in one of the pieces I’m making.

I am watching you, Mama Deerie.
I am watching you, Mama Deerie.

Oh, Mama Deerie, did you feel my eyes on your back? My formerly feral eartipped feline eyes watching you browse in the yard? Don’t forget my heritage! I am a fine felioness! I have lived in the great outdoors and I know how to hunt!

You won't get away!

Mama Deerie wisely ran from the yard and escaped!

I’d like to thank the the wildlife for keeping the kids amused the past few days. It rained this morning and today is cool, but it rained so hard it came in the window because I hadn’t locked it!

The bright sun on the basement floor in the morning makes such clear shadows you can even see Mewsette’s whiskers. The trick was just to catch her in her one moment of not-rolling-around.

How to Spend a Hot Day
I guess it's never too hot for a cuddle with your brother. These two have been killing me with cuteness the past two hours, even when Giuseppe tried to smother Bean and it turned into a wrestling match between the second and third photo. They both got back into the basket and gave each other another bath and went back to sleep.

This little sketch from five years ago is still one of my favorites, in part because it’s bright and colorful and also because it’s very specific for place, but it’s timeless. The old casement with the vase of paintbrushes on the windowsill has been there a long time, the bright green trees outside the window, and many cats have spent time in the sun on the windowsill so it’s timeless. Funny that I painted this so early in my daily sketches series, five years ago. It was almost prophetic. Read more and purchase.

I’ve never seen a cat as open to belly rubs as Hamlet, and then sometimes he thinks I’m an axe murderer!
