Daily Photo: Fancy Boys Say Hello

two black cats on table
Fancy boys Basil and Hamlet hanging out.

The fancy boys say hello. It’s not just because they are longhaired and that makes them somewhat special that I call them “fancy,” though that’s part of it. I call them “fancy” for short—short for “Grade A Fancy.” That’s a technical designation, both “Grade A” and “Fancy,” that you’ll often see on food indicating that the item is just about the most perfect specimen of its group considering color, size, shape and the like, think of eggs.

These two have at times had a fraught relationship, though I’d also seen the two nap together very occasionally. Hamlet and his sister Ophelia arrived in September 2015 and took a long time to socialize. The two of them were close, chasing and playing and napping together, not quite socialized enough to meet an adopter. Hamlet’s sister was always friendlier and was adopted by a couple who she was surprisingly social with. They had other rescued cats but also wanted to adopt Hamlet if Ophelia’s adoption was successful. It was, but they felt three cats was enough. In the meantime, Hamlet adapted well here. The day after his sister was adopted he shyly approached Jelly Bean and wanted a few licks around the face. JB obliged and in time Hamlet approached the other three siblings for his affection and play and cuddles, and was friendly with the rest of the household and more trusting with me.

Hamlet is not a brave kitty, he needs a protector or two, a member of his own species who will reassure him that everything is okay and lick him on the forehead when he needs it. When we lost Mr. Sunshine, Hamlet lost his last big brother and was a little adrift for a bit. Then I saw him sidling up to Basil, rubbing on him and trying to get Basil to lick him on the head, which Basil did. They are the same age and Basil is a little timid himself, but Hamlet is fully trusting of Basil. I see them together frequently now, napping in a basket, sitting together in the sun. Both of them seem to be happy. And they look very fancy together.

Imaging Results, 2022

The Four Housecats of the Apocalypse together again.

The #fourhousecatsoftheapocalypse gather to offer me a guilt complex for eating my lunch in front of them, Mr. Sunshine acting pretty darned normal.

Mr. Sunshine went for imaging yesterday, a big piece of figuring out his condition. Not the best news, he has hypertension and it’s damaged his heart to a certain extent. The veterinarian isn’t exactly sure what’s going on inside his abdomen, but felt and saw lumps and nodules under the swollen lymph glands in the exams and her imaging, it’s likely lymphoma. Mr. Sunshine feels strong and confident to me, and I feel pretty confident too, so that’s how I plan to approach this.

I’m considering going to oncology with him because it may be something that could be managed somehow over a longer period of time, but we need to be careful of his heart disease. This definitely clarified that it’s two different things, possible lymphoma is one, and there may be an infection involved with the swelling that’s in his lymph glands, and the hypertension is the other. It was likely the hypertension that caused his issues three weeks ago that showed me all this.

So off we go on our journey. I’ll be posting my featured artwork of Mr. Sunshine in a day or two, and also having some special items I make and sell that feature Mr. Sunshine! In the meantime, if you want to help us get to oncology, go to www.portraitsofanimals.net and do a little shopping, or go to www.thecreativecat.net and send us a little donation. Thank you!

Mr Sunshine shows me his toe beans. He’s in his basket on my desk behind the pencil cups, and his legs are everywhere. I’d say he’s pretty relaxed and comfortable.

Again, if you’d like to help me with Mr. Sunshine’s care…

I talked with our veterinarian about senior panels for Mewsette, Giuseppe and Jelly Bean and she said I could bring them in all at the same time. I’d also like to do a follow-up for Mimi, selling my merchandise is how I pay for that. I do have some graphic design work and that usually pays the household bills. Visit my website, www.PortraitsOfAnimals.net, and do some shopping! I have been making handmade gift items like crazy between everything else, plus artwork and photography for yourself or for gifts. Also consider a portrait, or a portrait certificate. It would make me very happy to pack and ship things to you in return for money.

The antibiotic that cleared up Mimi’s kidney infection last year was $200 for six weeks, and I haven’t seen her look this good for about five years. I might even say it saved her life because that deep infection that no one else had diagnosed was wearing her down and had effects on her digestion and mobility. A long-term advanced antibiotic is the standard treatment for a deep infection, though, and while that’s less expensive than even simple cancer treatments, it’s still an expense and I want to be ready. I’m also seeing symptoms in Mewsette and Giuseppe that I’ve wanted to have examined too, and if there is a connection with toxoplasmosis and some of these symptoms, a toxoplasmosis test for one cat is $140. Vendor show season starts in earnest in July, though I have events in June set up, as well as a fairly big event in a few weeks, but that income is in the future and upredictable.

As always, thanks for following us, and thanks for caring! I always appreciate hearing from you, no matter how that happens.

Basil Says Hold Off a Bit, 2020

Basil asks for a few seconds.

Basil wants to look his best for his photo so he asks me to hold off until he can clean up a bit, and gives his fuzzy face a quick wash. It looks as if he’s making a fist! But a closer look and you can see a pink tongue.

Point of View, 2019

Point of View
Point of View

So we have three cats all looking in different directions…no, we have two, one is a reflection. Is Mariposa’s reflection a part of reality, or just a reflection of the moment? So whose point of view prevails here? I put the focus on Mariposa reflected in the mirror. In the meantime, Basil and I will continue on with our existential crisis.

Is Mewsette having creative thoughts? Well, she is a Creative Cat! I love using the window and the vase of brushes as a backdrop. The sun is streaming in and reflects off my white drafting table so Mewsette is well illuminated. What an inspiration.

Yesterday, when I ran out of time to post, I shared a buttercups photo of Mimi, “The sun came out.”

Later in the day when the sun moved over the house it came flooding the dining room window, causing a group sunbath.

Bella Just Can’t Be Any Cuter!, 2016

The feet in the air and...no head.
The feet in the air and…no head.

I just can’t figure out which photo is cuter! I decided to post all four.

Bella was totally enjoying herself in the grapes box with her new favorite mousie, the tiger stripe, now that she has banished the violet mousie for some infraction (I keep finding it stuffed behind the cat tree).

First it was the paws in the air that I saw from the corner of my eye and quickly got a photo—hind paws in the air, front paws in the air, and the mousie where her face should be! She was tossing it in the air and catching it!

Then she got distracted by a bird outside the window…

Looking around a bit.
Looking around a bit.

And then she saw me stand up and look into the box, and that was even funnier!

One green eye.
One green eye.

Once she realized I’d seen her she was all about putting herself back together, but I saw her in action!

Time to get out of here!
Time to get out of here!

I’ve been off of posting for a week again, but I’ll be starting up again this weekend. I had two huge design jobs in here at one time, and while I usually schedule around that I had no way of reorganizing things this time. My library will be 115 years old on May 1, and that’s been a pretty big deal to prepare for and to celebrate this weekend, one of the big projects.

Also, Hamlet and Ophelia are finally really exploring and getting accustomed to the household instead of hiding most of the time they are out, which is most of the day, and are no longer frightened of me with my camera. They needed some supervision since I didn’t want them to revert to being traumatized by things like loud noises or unexpected encounters with the other cats. I’ll update on that this weekend!
