Daily Photo: Evening Sun

Evening Sun
Evening Sun

My camera complained that it only saw black, but I saw some lovely graceful outlines. Basil and Bella share the same sunpuddle, delicately outlined by warm evening sunlight. I love to see the two of them relaxing together.

A white whisker…in a house of black cats!

Three of the housepanthers occasionally have a white whisker or two. I think Mewsette lost one of hers.

Somebody Save Me, 2014
two black cats
I had a hard time concentrating today.

This is what I have to put up with when I’m trying to work. Two incredibly cute cats doing their best to distract me! Somebody save me from this!

First Mewsette washes her brother’s face.

Really, Mewsette and Mr. Sunshine have the whole house to do this. Granted, it’s not a big house, but why right where they know I’ll stop what I’m doing and watch?

Then he washes her face.

And then I have to take a bunch of photos.

Can we have some privacy?

It’s totally unfair. I want to complain about my working conditions.

Bubble Wrap is the New Paper, 2013

I couldn’t understand why she wanted me to move.

Around here, paper is everywhere. While boxes are still a cat’s best friend and plenty are available at any given time, paper is just too common to be exciting anymore—and besides, the human freaks unexpectedly when you touch certain papers—so for a quick stop, bath and possibly a brief nap a substitute for paper had to be found.

This stuff is pretty cool. It’s really weird to walk on…but you get used to that, even when it…POPS! I didn’t like the stuff with the bigger lumps. Maybe my children could use that with their bigger paws but not my petite paws.

Those big bubbles are bigger than my paws!

Of course, the human takes all the fun away, but we came up with a compromise: I get my own piece of bubble wrap and a comfortable place to supervise.

She always needs supervision, we never know what she’ll do.

And I get my work done!

Mom, What Are You Doing Down There? 2011

Jelly Bean really isn’t the slightest bit concerned.

Mom, why are you lying on the floor down there?

You have that big black thing on your face again.

You came running up the steps talking to me, and then instead of petting me you laid down on the floor on the landing but you’re still talking and moving that black thing around.

Sometimes I don’t know what to think. Sometimes thinking is too hard anyway, but that’s another story.

Are all humans like this?

I think I’ll just have a good laugh and go back to sleep. It’s too hot to think about it right now.

Get Better Reception, 2010

Cat Ears for Better Reception

Need better reception? Get a pair of cat ears for your monitor. Cats have natural magnetism and their cup-shaped ears capture data in a wide range of frequencies from nearly 180 degrees and funnel them down to their natural sensors. Available in a variety of colors, styles and sizes. Works even when the cat is sleeping. Unfortunately you lose the connection when they decide to go off and sleep somewhere else, and reception is choppy when the cat is bathing.

Dickie likes to sleep behind my flat-screen monitor on a little shelf that’s just his size.

I fostered Dickie for a year from October 2009 to October 2010. See more photos and read articles about Dickie.

Watching the World in profile.

We all love my studio window, a big, old, battered metal-framed casement about 4′ x 4′ on the second floor looking out at the spruce, maple and river birch in the front of our house. I call it the “tree house” as we watch the weather and light change and spend time with all the tree-dwellers in the neighborhood above the street. Giuseppe was watching Mr. Cardinal singing his spring song on this particular afternoon and I watched the light and images reflect on his eye and admiring his profile.
